UK selects Wylfa to host at least three Rolls-Royce SMRs
The UK government has announced that Wylfa on the island of Anglesey, North Wales, will host three Rolls-Royce small modular reactors. It said the site - where a Magnox plant is being decommissioned - could potentially host up to eight SMRs.  ;

The project is expected to create up to 3,000 jobs, attract billions in investment, and deliver clean power to the grid by the mid-2030s.

Originally opened in 1971, the Wylfa nuclear power station operated for 44 years before its reactors were shut down in 2015.

In this piece for Utility Dive, Anthropocene Institute’s Director of Data Science, Guido Núñez-Mujica, argues that preventing 430M metric tons of CO₂ annually and running more than 90% of the time, nuclear projects can’t earn carbon credits under major standards—

Plans include building up to 12 advanced modular reactors (AMRs) in Hartlepool, England through a partnership between US-based X-Energy and UK-based Centrica. Officials say the Hartlepool project alone could power 1.5 million homes and create 2,500 jobs.

Its 57 reactors, which provide about 70% of the country’s electricity, are increasingly ramping down during the day when energy from wind and solar flood the grid and ramping back up in the evening as demand rises. For example, on one August day, output swung from 24 GW at 1pm to 42 GW by 9pm.
