I don't keep track of them but there seems to be one here a lot of the time. Not sure why nowhere can fix them on the west coast!

They're here pretty frequently, I presume being fixed. Saw this one come in yesterday.

It's definitely up there. The call plus the places where they live is a winning combination.

Thank you! I should order your book, which looks great - congratulations on it.

Yes, I spent a few days there last year. It was very windy!

Like these, from April last year...

I can see why you said that, as it seems to show a white tip to the tail. I'm not sure it's really white though and it doesn't look sturdy enough or black and white enough for an Eastern Kingbird.

Savannah and Song for the sparrows. Probably Greater Yellowlegs, although it's not a really clear photo.

Think the first is Eastern Phoebe. Agree on the plover. Thrush looks better for Hermit with those large black breast spots.

My dad did a PhD in his retirement (at the same time I did mine!). I'm currently supervising a PhD student who's about 50 and am likely to be supervising one in their 40s soon. Although it's not the majority, older PhD students are fairly common.

Strangely, my experience is that this kind of interference from parents is much less prevalent than it used to be. I used to get phone calls or visits from 'concerned parents' semi-regularly but it hasn't happened for years, which is a relief. It's extremely awkward when it happens.

Can I suggest to your headline writers that this is mainland Britain's most westerly village shop and not the UK's.

They sometimes can be yes. I've seen them flying around the middle of Barcelona. Some ibis species are very urban and act almost like gulls or crows in scavenging around trash. Glossy aren't quite like that but they do well in human influenced environments.

A lucky escape!

It seemed to be tailing off when I stopped. It was very flashy all morning, with definite flurries of movement between periods when it was quiet. Almost all the Little Auks were in a 40-minute period.

I'm an anthropologist but only nominally.
October 25, 2025 at 4:36 PM
Yes that would usually be the case I think.

I think in practice these tend to merge together, or at least it's hard to do one without doing the other to an extent. People definitely talk about 'The History and Philosophy of Science' as a field of study.
