Chicago Pile-1 led directly to the secret construction of the X-10 graphite reactor at Oak Ridge, Tennessee (left), and the B Reactor at Hanford, Washington (right). The latter produced plutonium for the first atomic bomb, detonated 957 days later about 35 miles southeast of Socorro, New Mexico.

Ted Petry, the last of the 49 witnesses to this world-changing event, died in 2018 (he commemorated the 75th anniversary in 2017). Petry was a 17-year-old high school student who worked as a laborer building the 20-foot-tall pile out of tons of ultra-pure graphite, uranium metal, and uranium oxide.

Based on the familect my kid and I have developed over the past decade, I am 100% serious about my theory that the Great Vowel Shift was started by teenagers making up the 14th c equivalent of "smol"
based on how often the naughty teens of major cities throw the rentable scooters directly into the river i've formed a theory that the many iron age swords and cauldrons found in lakes around europe that we've previously assumed were ceremonial and sacrificial in nature were in fact thrown by teens

Just imagining how much better it would be if ALL news stories about vaccine-preventable illnesses were illustrated with pictures of people with the disease, not pictures of needle injections. If you must show something that people will find scary & unpleasant, make it the disease, not the cure.
