Not *the* Iain MacDonald: just another Iain MacDonald.
Outer Hebridean Inner Londoner.
Harmonising with The Everly Brothers.
One man's civilisation is another man's jungle.
You might as well laugh - you won't get your money back.

My longest-serving pinned tweet on Twitter was: "No, I don't have 'an extra i'. I have the full complement of 'i's. Those other people are lacking an 'i'. Thank you, that will be all."

(I quite liked it, but you can't pin posts here (yet).)

We’ve mapped the mansion tax.

You can see who's paying - which constituency, which postcode - and how many "mansions" are near you.

Absolutely bonkers; demonstrating an ignorance of Christianity, history and logic. At the level of idiots who say that because Jesus said 'the poor you will always have with you', measures in the direction of ending poverty are unchristian.

You know how some buses have screens rotating through the cctv on the bus? A bus I was on this morning was showing us the driver's foot on the pedals.

From now on, when discussing the budget, please use “is this measure bigger than the cost to the exchequer of gen Z drinking less” as your metric for assessing whether something actually raises or costs a significant sum

I bought my small Fender acoustic guitar in 1985, at the end of first year off a final year student in the same halls, who when I offered him the £35 quoted on the noticeboard note told me I should haggle him down, so I offered £30, which he accepted. I've certainly had my money's worth out of it.

This is a lovely clip of The Stone Roses rehearsing Waterfall. I had no idea that Reni did the harmony vocals, pretty unusual for a drummer; and he has a lovely voice, and seems as carefree and relaxed with it as with his drumming.
I watch this every time I am feeling a bit miserable and want to remind myself what humans are capable of. He plays with effortless swing and grace, pinching cymbals like he’s picking daisies and harmonising so sweetly it’s as if he’s dragging Ian Brown back into key. youtu.be/4PBU_N5x4ls

Step 1: Leave job.
Step 2: ...
Step 3: Become working life peer scrutinising legislation in the House of Lords.
What's your absolutely unworkable plan to drop out of your current life (or at least work life) and do something completely different?

I saw someone posting that they always opened boxes of tablets at the wrong end, where the leaflet was in the way; but of course they were opening the box at the correct end, the leaflet is put in that way because you should really read it before you take the tablets, at least the first time.

Or, as people from the Isle of Lewis would say, 'Who are those guys with Roddy Murray?' (of @anlanntair.bsky.social , among other things).

(An April 1981 Sounds? I probably bought that.)
'The Dreamboys

Early 1980s Scottish post-punk group (started as "Bastards from Hell" initially) featuring a young Peter Capaldi, and at one point, the role of drummer was filled by comedian/talk show host/writer Craig Ferguson.'

Watched the fifth of six Riot Women episodes, another grim one; if this series doesn't end happily I'm going to be very disappointed.

my new book is published tomorrow! I have put an extract here for free of what I think might be the most important thing I say in the whole book - how to preserve friendships during an information crisis (and why it's important to try, if you can)

The reaction to the Panorama edit has been nothing short of hysterical. Yes the BBC has some impartiality problems. But its biggest isn't the one you think.

New piece from me.

Is there a better opening line to any song than 'Night hangs on the city like a blanket on a cage'? No, no there isn't.

Listening to the latest Rest Is History episode, about Queen Elizabeth. From the contemporary accounts they cite, it sounds like Ann Boleyn would best be played in a drama by someone like a young Tilda Swinton.

Glad that someone has finally taken responsibility for the appalling assault on democracy that was the Jan. 6 insurrection.

Slightly confused that it's the Director-General of the BBC, but what do I know?

Just in time at the end of the day to say that when I was wee (70s) we used to call it Guy Fawkes Night. I'm not sure the period of the transition to everyone calling it Bonfire Night, but it seems pretty complete now.
