Spectacular black and white marine mosaic in the women’s changing room (apodyterium) at the Central Baths, ancient Herculaneum. Triton with dolphins, cherub, octopus and cuttlefish. 1st century AD.

Modern changing rooms could do with a Roman style upgrade!

This year’s most read post on The Auditorium (our team blog)! You might be thinking What is a Narrative CV? How do I write a Narrative CV? What do I use it for? And ‘How can I support my researchers…?’ Well then, this is for you!

Easy to put 'interdisciplinary research approach' in proposals without considering what's needed for success.

Spoiler alert: more than simply working with someone from another department.

Carr et al. highlight the many factors involved in below graph:

The Pac-Man Rule at Conferences
I firmly believe that conferences can provide a lot of value for people in an industry. Conferences allow people to create a network, which helps them feel integrated in a community and profession....

One small change that I wish people who do research with international students would make is to stop saying "the international student experience" and use something like "international students' experiences" instead. They aren't singular or definitive.

Usually I don't post things older than the late Palaeolithic period, but #insects embedded in amber never cease to amaze me - the sheer age!

This ant preserved in its finest detail is some 50-million-year old.

Found in Gujarat, India.

Seeing a lot of "how to leave academia" LinkedIn posts. I get the sentiment, I've had different roles within and beyond academia. But what if we reframed it? Instead of focusing on a big EXIT, talk about broadening career paths? Such perspective makes it so much easier to explore new possibilities.

As the northern hemisphere heads into the coldest, darkest months, here for #MosaicMonday is a depiction of Winter. With her dark blue hooded cloak wrapped tight, her melancholy expression and the leafless twig gloomily brandished, it’s clear the mosaicist knew the British winter

Reading about research collaborations:

"Following Laudel (2002), a research collaboration can be defined as that situation in which n>1 scientists functionally relate and coordinate their research activities in order to
achieve specific research and/or collaboration goals."

It is easy to think of research impact as something GRAND, like changing a government policy.

But impact can be, or start, small—like sharing your work with others. Why not celebrate this?

This sign always makes me chuckle when I walk past.

Not just because I do love scones, but also because it’s a clear reminder that questionnaire design is both an art AND a science.

Not only useful for teams but also for individuals in the research ecosystem

Where are you now?
Where do you want to be?
What could help you move in the right direction?
In action planning for change, we should think (not just about changing processes/pathways) but about relationships/connections. Use the "Collaboration Spectrum" to discuss where we are now in key partners relationships & where we want to be in future: thecenterforimplementation.com/toolbox/the-...

I used to casually use terms like cross-disciplinary and inter-disciplinary research interchangeably, without giving it much thought. Sharing this summary in case it’s helpful for others—keen to hear your thoughts or improvements!
