Another sad morning in the Green backyard.....the birds are flying in for morning breakfast only to be startled when the diner is laying on the ground. Yup, the rowdy hoodlums closed the café again. I need a bear proof bird feeding setup!!!!

Better to see wild horses in wild and not in my camp or around people.

I told them that they needed to move on. Pippa did too although not so nicely. They kept munching..... at Assateague Nat'l SS

Had a thought yesterday that the OBX would be a great place for a Sr Trip....my brain still gets in school mode even though it's been almost a year.... Roanoke settlement, Freeman's Colony, lighthouses, Nat'l Wildlife refuge & Wright Bros. Memorial....so much to see & do!!

We ended day by driving & hiking through the Alligator River Nat'l Wildlife Refuge. No alligator sighting-too chilly. Wanted to see at least 1 of the Red Wolves - only location where these very endangered wolves roam free. No such luck.

And then we went next door to the Eluzabethan Gardens which was created by NC Garden Clubs. Beautiful with all the azaleas blooming!!

It's been nice not needing AC. Yesterday was cool, cloudy and windy. Kinda did not want that so soon. But we got in some good beach time.

We are now on Cape Hatteras for the weekend. Plans to go south to Rodanthe and Ocracoke. This is the Bodie Lighthouse which is kinda across the street from where we are camped. On Sunday, we'll go north to Kill Devil Hills and Kitty Hawk

Next door to the VC is the Core Sound (named after Coree Indians) Waterfowl Museum & Heritage Center. Displays of carved birds and historical info on the communities that make up this part of the Southern Outer Banks was really cool

We hiked a couple trails around VC. The wind was wild so the White Ibis were roosting in trees.

On to NC & another Forest Service campground on the Neuse River. Beautiful, private sites. Went to the coast and Harker Island to visit the Cape Lookout Nat'l Seashore VC. Cape Lookout is part of the most southern Outer Banks. The lighthouse has a distinctive pattern.

Stayed in Forest Service campground north of Charleston in an area known for sweetgrass baskets. While the road side shacks aren't used much anymore because of the widening of Rt17, I did get to see and talk with basket makers at the Charleston City Market. 4 blocks of open air market/vendors.

In the afternoon we went to Jekyll Island and a beach that allows dogs, appropriately named Diftwood Beach....really cool!

People hear UN and think it is bad. She said she thought they did not understand the benefit. I didn't get pictures of the 2 signs that were in town alongside the main road into refuge.
April 6, 2025 at 10:20 PM
While everyone was marching Saturday, Pippa and I spent morning at the Okefenokee Nat'l Wildlife Refuge. The only protest signs I saw were against the Okee becoming part of UN World Heritage Site. Not understanding why someone would be against, I asked Visitor Center staff. She said .....

My 2 nights in Tomoka SP have gone fast. This park was impacted by Hurr. Milton last Fall. All roads have to be replaced, so driving is slow. I also didn't do alot. Had a great visit w/cousin & her husband who I haven't seen in years. Nice to reconnect. Last night in Florida for this trip. 😥

We went to the Nataniel Reed Hobe Sound Nat'l Wildlife Refuge which protects a huge section of coastline for a variety of nesting sea turtles. We were also introduced to the invasive Agama Lizard who is quite large.

Working our way up the Florida east coast. We stayed in Jonathan Dickinson SP, just north of Jupiter, the past 3 nights. It is locsted on the Loxahatchee River. Saw lots of gopher tortoise , esp in the mornings (sorry the humidity put condensation on my camera lens).

I am just east of Lake Okeechobee

Who needs fireworks when you've got the natural version. Crazy storms along the FL east coast.

Saturday was rainy with thunder & lightening. We got out early and explored the Marathon Key area before heavy rain started. Stopped at Boca Chica Beach to watch wind surfers and walk beach trails. Portuguese Man O'War washed in.

Well, we did the Keys. Friday we went down to Key West. It's a big town. I guess I did realize how big. Lots of tourists. Not feeling up for all the people and lines. Got a quick pic of the buoy. My Hemingway house photo did not come through. We stopped at a nice community park on Big Pine Key.
