In The Important Work, we publish pieces by high school and college instructors about how they're thinking about/using/not using AI int he classroom. Today, as students head back to school, we're sharing the perspective of a high school student. theimportantwork.substack.com/p/at-my-high...
At my high school no one is talking about AI
But everyone is using it

Re-upping: if you work at EPA, NOAA, FEMA, NIH, CDC, USDA or other agencies that involve really any sort of science in their work, and you have something you want the public to know, I would always love to hear from you. Signal is davelevitan.26 and you can remain anonymous.
Hey is it good that FEMA is suspending employees that warned publicly that the agency isn't ready to manage disasters with the peak of hurricane season two weeks away
'A lot of folks are terrified': FEMA joins EPA in retaliation against dissenting staff
The result of all that is an obvious chilling of the federal workforce's speech.

I struggle with the reporting on ChatGPT in education because it often confirms society’s negative bias against young people—oh no, this generation is unsaveable!—when it’s possible to just educate people to be less credulous about it. which is why I wrote this: so teachers could print and assign it
ChatGPT Is Everywhere — Why Aren't We Talking About Its Environmental Costs?
One estimate found that a single ChatGPT search uses 10 times the energy of a normal Google search.

Whole thread ⬇️ ‼️
Katie's right, but I want to nuance the issue.

Students come into college with an understanding of writing that is mechanical and algorithmic. It mistakes mastery of the basic form of an essay for using that form to articulate that point. Part of this is due to the culture around student writing.
I SAY THIS EVERY DAY: THERE IS AN ILLITERACY PROBLEM THAT IS ONLY GETTING WORSE.

death to chatgpt for exacerbating the issue.
