Nothing about ageing makes sense except in the light of evolution. Excited about understanding how we live and why we die.

So it turns out my first ever substack post is about fashion, not quite the menswear guy for trans women but it's a start
Basic fashion intuitions for trans women: Shape
This is not intended to be authoritative, I do not necessarily know what I’m doing.

Can't believe it took me. At least a year? To consider that Google might have developed a convenient way to transfer files directly from my laptop to my phone and vice versa

I am quite skeptical of this claim. I am almost certainly 90th+ percentile for "general knowledge of geopolitics" and I do not have a clear understanding of what exactly is meant by "The Russian federation is an oligarchy"
uh, people definitely know what oligarchy means? the hell?
Ok how thirsty do we think Slotkin is to run for president in 2028 as a Sensible Centrist who was also a Troop (CIA)?

One of the most annoying things about stimulant crash is feeling like I have all these emotions I want to deal with. But also knowing that I'm only experiencing them because of the drug, or lack thereof, so it's a little pointless?

This is why I have a certain skepticism of therapy

The lines
"All we may ask of you we have; the rest
Is not for publication, will not be heard" have echoed in my head ever since the first time I read this and I'm not sure why
I've read a fair amount of poetry lately, and yet this one has stuck with me more than any other. Not sure why

I am resentful of the fact that I have *chosen* to make myself an ugly woman and if I want to be anything else it will be many £££'s

I had a dream where
I was being shown an invention
That was a cheap mechanism for setting priors in mechanical devices
And this was important because setting priors in manufacturing was an incredibly expensive thing which prevented Yugoslavia from being able to perform advanced manufacturing

This is perhaps a good demonstration of the way that X and Bsky make smart people say stupid things. No ones principles are separate from the people they imagine themselves to be. The charitable and uncharitable reads aren't very different, but people mostly care about making biting comments.
The more uncharitable analysis -- which I think is more accurate -- is that *none* of this is based around intellectual or even political principles but is ultimately based around the question of what kinds of media cocktail parties do you want to be invited to...

"It is absurd to claim that Laith Ashley is “really female” or “really male.” Laith Ashley—like other transsexuals and many detransitioned people—has an iatrogenic intersex condition"
This is the only reasonable belief vis a vis trans people's sex. You can't believe anything else in good faith.

I am currently in the position where it is many orders of magnitude easier to get an interview for a PhD at Cambridge than it is to get an interview for a research assistant job. I don't quite know what is going on

I write a lot of takes that I expect to get cancelled for on Bluesky but the folks coming after me for this one really took me by surprise.

Never change, folks.

I'm way too brain fogged to do set theory rn but I feel very strongly compelled to try because it should be simple and easy. The next exercise I have is proving De Morgans laws but I have to revise the notation being used because it's not totally intuitive so I only half understand the exercise

Okay I should go and do math but: I think the problem with "Trans rights" as understood by the most prominent trans activists is that they consider them to the right to have society stops understanding "gender" as having any relationship to birth sex
Actually I think "trans rights" are a bad concept in the first place because "Trans" isn't a well defined category, in much the same way that "Gay rights" is not about the right to be gay, it's about the right to have societies understanding of romantic relationships contain no reference to gender

stupidest thing about Scott Alexander going "huh, we just wanted to talk about 'biological realism', but now there are nazis everywhere?!" is that are from a rationalist perspective *extremely* clear & compelling reasons for having discursive norms against "are these people subhuman? let's discuss."
