If you say things like “ah well you know how females are” or “oh females always do this” I want you to know that I have judged you and found you lacking
I know I’m a biologist working in reproductive behaviours but sometimes? Sometimes I just need to spend 24 hours without hearing the word “female”. (This is specifically directed at people who say “female” when talking about humans, particularly when they mean to say “woman”)

There is a certain irony about NERC putting out a funding call entitled “AI for environmental science”

Nothing like writing a PhD thesis to make a man feel both incredibly smart and also incredibly inept at the same time

Hello I have just discovered that the people who made the spider gripper robots are based at the same uni that made the rice purity test

Did you know that bisexual flowers are perfect? Botanists do.

My latest pin celebrates the fact that 90% of flowering plants have individual flowers with both male and female parts. Botanists call these 'bisexual' or 'perfect' flowers. Please share!

The day my first scientific article is published is also the day I adopt my first dog- if you excuse me I shall be vibrating with joy over in the corner

I’m adopting a dog in the next few weeks and I can’t believe I’m expected to work instead of lay on the floor and think about Booster

Submitting to a format-agnostic journal is all fun and games until revised manuscripts have to be submitted in publication-ready format and you have 60 days to reformat and also do revisions

I’m doing my first ever stand up set tonight! Come see if you’re around :)

This is so cool and I love it but I did literally spend the last two days making phylogenies without this and so I’m maybe a little sad 🙃

If you think these are pretty but you're not trans and you're worried you shouldn't wear them, just go for it. You have permission. Enjoy the pretty fern and have fun confusing the transphobes. Wear it as a reminder to be an active ally. canopyrobin.etsy.com/listing/4312... #SciArt

We're halfway through Pride so now seems a good time to drop a pin that people have been requesting: something for allies.

The thing is though, I'm not interested in selling a traditional ally pin that allows just anyone to claim they're on our side, so lets talk about that 🧵

What is common knowledge in your field, but. shocks outsiders?

Most birds don’t have p*nises - the ones that do are “inflated” lymphatically rather than with blood like in mammals
What is common knowledge in your field, but shocks outsiders?

The ocean produces a huge chunk of the world's oxygen a lot from a class of cyanobacteria called prochlorococcus
What is common knowledge in your field, but shocks outsiders?

Food systems are the #2 contributor to climate change, the #1 driver of deforestation, the #1 driver of biodiversity loss on land, and the #1 user of freshwater.

(It follows that food systems contain many solutions to these problems.)
