They did so before the Schengen area was enacted, but these days it doesn't make any sense to not have an open border policy, but again, the trade off is that you need to have your ID with you and have to report your stays

That's still the thing about living in the Schengen Area, they're allowed to do this at will at any of the border crossings. I've been checked basically every single time I've taken the Snälltåget and on multiple occasions on regional trains between Germany and Austria.

You are required to have ID (whether that's your passport or national ID card) on you at all times in Germany.

2000 entrants a day for a theme park, Ontario Science Center, Concert Venue? Dude those parking spaces are going to be filled with family cars carrying like 3-6 people. There will be a subway line, a GO line, and 3 streetcar lines there too.
