The exhibits at the new EFM are extraordinarily awesome!

I find the contemporary “Darwin as a Monkey” art pieces so funny. Sure, they were satirical and thinly veiled mockery, but the fact that they look oddly plausible (like his head really could fit on there) kind of illustrates the point of “The Descent of Man”.

Did you know sea turtles at one point reclaimed the niche of predatory marine reptiles during the Age of Mammals? Trachyaspis, a Miocene pelagic sea turtle, evolved a pseudodont (‘false-toothed’) jaw and powerful forelimbs, likely chasing large, fast-moving cephalopods. #TurtlePower

Science communicators preparing for the millions of questions kids will now ask about the weird dinosaur mutant thing in #JurassicWorld.

You weren’t kidding!

The aquatic worlds of the Carboniferous were so fascinating… the vertebrate fauna feels familiar enough that you’d recognize them as belonging to modern clades yet you have anachronistic wackos like Tullimonstrum still swimming around!

Watching “White Tip's Journey” from #DinosaurPlanet and they feature a #Velociraptor named Broken Hand. I never noticed until now that his actual broken hand is oriented palm down like that of the Jurassic Park raptors… that’s a pretty clever way to teach the viewer!

Visited Dinosaur State Park, CT on Sunday and got to see the real footprints of ancient dinosaurs and was even greeted by one of their modern descendants! This site preserves hundreds of footprints and is a must-see for an East Coast paleo-enthusiast!

Sanderlings are like the perfect bird for someone getting into birding. They don’t let you get too close but don’t need such a wide berth. They move quick but not too quick that you can’t track their movement on the camera. They’re great subjects!

Visited a creek in NJ this weekend that bears a mix of Eocene-Miocene vertebrate material. What’s awesome is the first #fossil I found was a broken #Otodus chubetensis… I wasn’t even shooting to find anything I was just taking a walk by the stream!

Got out into the snowy wild today, this plucky fella was kind enough to pose for a picture.

Here’s something you never thought you needed to see today, #fossil shark poop! Coprolites are hilarious... some animal died eons ago but its mess survived long enough for a bunch of hairless monkeys to find it, gush over it, and prank their friends into holding it. If only we were all so lucky!

I haven’t been out much lately after catching a pretty gnarly cold, but right before I got sick I was checking out a regular #fossil haunt of mine for #cretaceous #amber. After depositing ~90mya, the Raritan formation’s amber deposits have since revealed thousands of fossilized #insect inclusions!

The link between #birds and their #dinosaur ancestors is endlessly fascinating. Take the second toe of #eagles: while they don’t keep it raised like dromaeosaurs or modern seriemas (ground-hunting birds of prey from South America), this toe bears the largest talon and is essential to subduing prey!

I love vintage #PaleoArt and there’s some real gems to be found amongst them. Take this piece by British painter Charles Whympher where a ‘pteradactyle’ is trying to steal a duck-billed platypus from the jaws of a Teleosaurus. It’s neat to see such outdated subjects interacting with a modern animal!

I just love how many scientists are actually on BlueSky. I honestly assumed it was an exaggeration but no really the community is leagues beyond what it was on Threads.

Anyways it’s #FossilFriday here’s a Devonian trilobite I found in the Mahantango formation of Central, PA!

I’m on BlueSky now! Looking for other like-minded accounts who have a passion for #Paleontology, #NaturalHistory, and #Biology! I’m based on the East Coast and love to visit local fossil spots and digs so if you share the same interests let’s connect.
