I am interested in how people advocate for a shift away from car-centric infrastructure. I write about design, UX and stories of freedom of movement from a genre and literacy studies foundation.
No Kings Rally in Virginia. It was a really good turnout.

In 2015, we had the experience of using the NL paper maps for bike routes. By 2017, it was available on an app, and now in google maps. Buying the maps meant arriving in Utrecht before the AAA equivalent closed, purchasing them there, and then learning to see main routes.

Cool! I dream of the day when a bike class rewards a kid for learning how to pick up a friend in classic NL dinking style, and drop them off at a train station without slowing down much. Instead all of my bike teaching skills in the states are about avoiding dangerous encounters with people in cars.

My students wanted to have the gorilla versus man discussion; I woke up missing the animals from my kidhood. That impossible situation of missing a place that always evokes a regime state childhood while watching a regime state attempt here.

Wouldn’t it be cool, if on a Sunday morning, my religious neighbors would head out to church on their bikes instead of in their SUVs. There’s a family, always racing, always 10 minutes late, always a danger and a menace to me and my pup. You’d think, after hundreds of Sundays, they’d learn.

My guy is at about 680 weeks right now, and a very good pup.

When I’m in the NL, I try to get at least one photo a day of a person in heels on a bicycle. Each of these bikes…so feasible for day to day moves.

On this International Women’s Day, I am longing for safe enough infrastructure to live my life as this woman is, taking her dog for a run, on a bike, in the Netherlands.

Wednesday.

There are days when I wish I were living in the NL, and these were my views. Once you know the impact of safer road infrastructures, it’s hard to inhabit the unsafe roads.

I take pictures of the ways people use this bike rack because it was purchased and installed before bicyclists explained to the powers that be about how bike racks should be chosen. They listened; the building next door has the preferred option. They also didn’t replace this bike rack.

Hoping for a snow day tomorrow…maybe 8 inches so far.

So I’m mulling my summer. I would love to be on a bike trip in the NL.

Saturday morning writing with Shino and these licorice sweets. I never have been a fan of licorice, but I’m exploring whether tastes change with growing older, and these were my most recent try. That I love them is shocking to me.

Shino has been searching for a second treat for 5 minutes even though I gave him his second treat. My error was that I allowed too much time to elapse between the first and the second, so he’s back to treat one in his mind, and therefore, he should get another. Time is a tricky devil.

In the middle of all the things, I’m dreaming of a trip this summer to the Netherlands.

What this day feels like: big heavy polluting objects/barriers between me and my desire for forward motion. I guess I’ll be trying to find the gap.

It’s Monday morning; I’m about to get in a car and drive on a highway to work. I dream instead of infrastructure robust enough that I could pack my gear in the panniers, and make my way to my job by bike, bus, and train. I’d like choices especially as I age. #bicycle #OldWomanMoves.

Yes! Here’s mine. Having been a licensed safety instructor for a bit, I realize that most of my bike skills are about avoiding being hit by people driving cars. In the NL, I take aspirational literacy pics, and this skill is high on my list. I want to steer with one hand while carrying groceries.

It’s winter, and I know that I want to live in a space where I can be my older self, wearing a warm coat, on an upright bike, moving safely about town. I’m not likely to want the hat, but everything else? Yes.

I’m looking for an insta alternative — it helps to know ahead of time that Pixelfed functions like mastadon. I was thinking about going to a straight up image space like glass.photo. Recommendations? Also, I’m looking for inspiration for what to have Moo Deng saying on this card…

Shino and I are mulling Saturday walks, with the possibility of temps above 35 for the first time in a couple weeks.
January 25, 2025 at 12:15 PM
Shino, the #ItalianGreyhound, hasn’t loved temps below freezing. The sweet old pup has trouble breathing outdoors when it’s this cold and makes sure I understand how reluctant he is to put on the warm layers I ask him to wear.
