It took a lot of searching, but I finally got Jem Smith on the 1911 and 1921 censuses! The address, 48 Torbay Road in Willesden, matches a court report from 1908.

The funniest part of this book (as Brendan later acknowledged) is that the cover photo isn't Sheffield at all - it's a London team, complete with Kinnaird on the left and Alcock, who was injured, standing behind.

Sorry to dampen this, but the players mentioned were active in the mid-late 1880s, including Archibald Carswell, Lochgilphead goalkeeper, who wrote the piece. So the timescale was out. Having said that, there are reports of New Year football at Bonawe from 1869.
