Anti-Muslim hate in the UK has reached record levels in recent months - we all have a duty to call out racism.

For Islamophobia Awareness Month, I met with @amnestyuk.bsky.social and @srtrcengland.bsky.social alongside @afzalkhanmcr.bsky.social to discuss how we challenge it.

Last night Middlesbrough Mayor Chris Cooke and his Executive team approved a partnership with regeneration specialists Capital & Centric to build thousands of new homes on the land where Middlesbrough's story began.

It was a pleasure to invite Clover from Middlesbrough's fantastic award-winning Wander Films to No. 11 Downing Street to be recognised for the role this brilliant SME business plays on Teesside employing local people and positively promoting our area.

At The Junction Multibank’s first anniversary, we saw dignity, solidarity and care in action.

I thank all staff and partner organisations.

One day we’ll consign Multibanks to history — but until then, we must end austerity, fight poverty and build a fairer Britain.

Today, we pause to remember all those who have died in service of our country, and express our gratitude to the brave personnel who continue to serve.

We will never forget the sacrifice and service of those who defended our country and fought for our freedom.

"It's a question of priorities. And this is the most magnificent transported bridge in the world. It's part of not only Teesside's industrial heritage, but our nation's industrial heritage too. And I actually don't care where the money comes from - as long as it happens."

I visited the site of the new Outwood Riverside School in the shadow of the Transporter Bridge.

The steel framework is now flying out of the ground.

This is going to be a fantastic addition to our town and a huge positive for so many of our young people who will benefit.

The Employment Rights Bill will improve your rights at work.

Reform, Tories and Lib Dems have tried to rip-up those rights.

But we will deliver on our promise to you.
November 6, 2025 at 6:45 PM
Today I spoke to ITV Tyne Tees about the news our iconic Transporter Bridge has been added to the Historic England "At Risk" register.

I was clear - we need to restore it, whatever it takes.

For 40 years, workers’ share of national income has fallen as union rights eroded—made worse by 14 years of Tory wage stagnation.

Labour’s task is to raise living standards.

The Employment Rights Bill delivers that—let’s defend it and deliver a fairer world of work.

I will be participating in Remembrance Services this Sunday.

But today I took on the #IPTPoppyRide challenge, in support of the Royal British Legion's #PoppyAppeal.

Today I joined Met Police civilian staff on strike with @pcsunion.bsky.social outside New Scotland Yard.

The Met should pay them a £1250 consolidated allowance to meet the cost of living in London, that was paid to police officers.

The Public Accountability Bill is a testament to the courage of the Hillsborough families. I welcome it's duty of candour.

I called for a full, judge-led inquiry into the tragedies at TEWV NHS Trust, so those families too can find truth and justice.

We need a National Strategy for Spinal Cord Injury, to replace the current fragmented approach with coordinated, person-centred care.

Today, I urged Ministers to meet the APPG on Spinal Cord Injury and respond to our new report.
October 30, 2025 at 3:45 PM
The Minister @katedeardenmp.bsky.social, said the govt has announced a £500 million investment in the first-ever fair pay agreement in the social care sector.

And they will review where further fair pay agreements can offer similar benefits.

Cost of living pressures are continuing.

Raising real incomes and living standards is the priority.

I asked which sectors are next for a fair pay agreement — and how the govt plans to extend them to lift wages.

The report was only possible with support from @spinalinjuries.bsky.social and the input of health practitioners, charities and people with lived experience.

We look forward to discussing its recommendations with Ministers.

Yesterday, as Chair of the Spinal Cord Injury APPG , I helped launch our new report on Building a National Strategy for Spinal Cord Injury.

It is a call to action for govt, health and care systems, and wider society to ensure that no one with a spinal cord injury falls through the cracks.

The waiting list for a new-build wheelchair accessible home is currently 40 years.

I met the Spinal Injuries Association where they were calling for mandating a minimum supply of wheelchair-accessible housing.

I continue to support campaigning WASPI women seeking compensation for the historic wrong of their pension loss.

They paid in and were let down - we must put it right.
October 23, 2025 at 2:48 PM
The Employment Rights Bill is an important milestone but must be part of a wider strategy to raise living standards and restore labour's share of wealth. Trade unions are central to that, providing the infrastructure through which workers can secure better pay, safer workplaces and a stronger voice.
October 23, 2025 at 9:07 AM
The most urgent task of the Labour government is clear: raising living standards. Trade unions are central to that.

They are the vehicle through which better pay, safer working conditions, and fairer working workplaces can be achieved. Equipping them effectively is fundamental.
