But Elser said she never got an apology or explanation. It seems the only evidence linking her to the crime was circumstantial data from a mass surveillance system. And the thing that saved her was the constant self-surveillance that we increasingly subject ourselves to.

Finally, she emailed her evidence to the police chief for Columbine Valley PD, which covers Bow Mar.

The chief, Bret Cottrell, responded: "After reviewing the evidence you have provided (nicely done btw), we have voided the summons that was issued."

She called the officer back. No luck. Called the mayor of Bow Mar and the town admin. No progress. "

Meanwhile, the local police posted to the Ring network, asking for images of a "suspect" green Rivian (which would be Elser's.)

The metadata matched exactly. She also had corroborating images from the camera at her tailor (which is where she was going), plus her truck and phone's GPS data.

“This incident has caused me significant emotional distress, financial burden, and professional concern,” she wrote in her notes.

He left her with a summons for December. It was petty theft, but it could ruin her career as a financial planner.

But as it turned out, she had exculpatory evidence. Her own car's video footage, reviewed by me, showed her driving straight through town at the data and time the officer specified.
