When I spoke to you earlier in the year I was concerned about language used by the Labour party it has since led to more extreme language such as the Powell island of strangers speech from Starmer and now people like Benjamin and Robinson approve of your policies. @samanthaniblett.bsky.social

Everything about this awful policy is wrong. How it was conjured up, how the people affected were silenced, how it was justified, how the impact assessment was manipulated, how the Bill was rushed through Parliament, and how it was completely forgotten after the news cycle moved on after last week
🚨BREAKING NEWS🚨

The Government's Universal Credit Bill has passed, rushing it through in one day, without a committee stage where Disabled people's voices could have been heard.

It's clear: the government views Disabled lives as nothing more than a cost-cutting exercise

Did you listen to this speech from Rachel Maskell?
@samanthaniblett.bsky.social
“If we can afford not to have a wealth tax, not to equalise capital gains, or draw on the excess profits of corporate greed; then we can afford PIP.”

Labour MP Rachael Maskell gave a passionate and emotive speech at the welfare bill debate in commons this afternoon. Watch the clip 🎬

A long thread on why the concessions in and around the UCPIP Bill (ie the disability benefits cuts) are illusory, disingenuous and potentially makes things worse 🧵

There are 5 big myths to bust -fifth is the most difficult to untangle, but the most significant in my view, so please do bear with 🙂

It took over TWO YEARS plus a tribunal for me to be awarded the PIP I was legally entitled to. The assigned doctor on the panel behaved monstrously and I was diddled put of higher rate. This damaged my already fragile mental health. Now they think I should have to appeal AGAIN?? Venal bastards
Labour expects hundreds of thousands to keep PIP via appeals. But appeals destroy mental health and cost millions. So why force this ordeal? Only explanation: you want the appearance of savings, not real ones. Pure cruelty. #WelfareNotWarfare #TakingThePip

Chaminda's work on the disability cuts has been invaluable.

This shows that contrary to many media assumptions that PIP cuts are primarily around mental health - they would affect lots of people with cancer, heart disease, and numerous other physical illnesses and disabilities.
NEW: Labour's planned disability benefit cuts could affect the majority of current working-age claimants with ischaemic heart disease, inflammatory arthritis, hip and knee disorders and Crohn’s disease, according to analysis of new DWP data

By me, for the Big Issue:

Majority of PIP claimants with heart disease, arthritis and Crohn's at risk of cuts
DWP data obtained by Big Issue shows that the majority of people with heart failure, HIV and arthritis are at risk of losing their benefits.

I've had lots of negative interactions with the general public when I've been out and about using mobility aids. Whilst using a motorised wheel chair I've had people reach over me to get something in a supermarket, nearly pushed out of chair in supermarket.

One of the reasons I was turned down for PIP last month when I tried to renew was that I was *well enough to care for my mother.* The government wants very much to enjoy its unpaid carer cake. And who wouldn’t? It’s care provision, and it’s unpaid!
NEW: Tens of thousands of disabled households could face a “triple hit” of benefit cuts due to the impact on Carer’s Allowance

DWP figures show 95,000 unpaid carers stand to lose PIP - and for some the impact could be even worse
