The obvious next question is - how would they get there then? The worst example given was “£600 for a 100 mile round trip” (is that 50 miles each way of 200 miles in total). What would that have cost by public transport? How long would it have taken? How could the asylum seeker have paid for it?

The surprising things to me are that Airbus managed to identify that as the cause of the problem. It seems like an incredibly rare, random event with a microscopic effect.

That was enough to cause the plane to decide to descend. Simplistically, I imagine the changed bit made the computers think an aileron was up rather than down, so it moved it down without the pilot asking for it.

At the risk of doing the same: it sounds like a single bit of memory (a binary bit rather than a small chunk) was flipped or damaged when hit by solar radiation (I am guessing a gamma ray as other forms of radiation are stopped by thin aluminium).

You are also in a comfy seat (providing you don’t fly American Airlines), there is continuous, loud, white noise to stop anyone talking to you, and there are snacks on demand. I got so much work done on my occasional transatlantic flights.

Worth looking at the new policy on fossil fuel tax too. It will start going up again next year and the policy is for annual increases from then. EV per mile tax won’t start till 2028.

Slightly confusing use of charge/charging has been rife this week. The tax will be calculated based on 3p per mile driven. How miles driven is calculated/reported is undecided.

“We have too much of a very expensive thing in the wrong place, whatever should we do?“. How about building the data centre somewhere where the expensive thing (heat) can be used. Swimming pools, community heating, greenhouses, industrial drying facilities… so many options

Rule 273 for thriving at work: When your boss says they are incompetent, believe them. I hope her new job was better paid.

Interesting choice of words given the more colloquial US meaning of hoo hah

This feels like a great way to confuse liability for fraud, and extend compensation cases out beyond the death of the victims, as the different parties argue about who should pay it.

“will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law” feels like an indictment of the US. Why do you need to say that? Is it saying “our only response to this is to threaten pain on anyone else thinking of it” or “we know the rich and powerful are immune to the law but this guy is getting fried”?

I would love to see a more nuanced analysis of this number over the last 10 years. Did the end of Covid lockdown lead to a huge bump in the numbers as students came back (and then 3 years till they start leaving again)? Did Brexit stop UK folks moving to Europe? … and so on.

It isn’t strictly true unfortunately. I suspect the loophole for extensions to existing fields will be used to open new fields by the backdoor.

Having worked in tech for more years than I can care to mention, I have seen every innovation embraced and improved by the porn industry. Furries and swingers is a big improvement.

Less mentioned, on fuel duty “(in 2026)… the five pence cut first brought in back in 2022 will be reversed in a “staggered approach”. From April 2027, fuel duty will be increased in line with the Retail Prices Index (RPI).“

So fuel prices will increase two years before EV mileage taxes happens.

I am of an age where I remember all lesbian couples were assumed to have a turkey baster by the trashy tabloids. I believe it was something to do with making men redundant (sexwise). Always seemed rather bizarre.

I was horrified to learn recently that victims of sexual crimes can’t discuss them with their therapist until after the trial has finished. With the long trial delays that could mean half a decade dealing with it on your own.

For regular prescriptions a pre-pay certificate helps

“A prescription costs £9.90 per item, but a PPC costs:
£32.05 for 3 months
£114.50 for 12 months
This means if you're going to buy 4 or more prescriptions in 3 months, or 12 or more prescriptions in 12 months, it may be cheaper to buy a PPC.”

I guess the same applies to anyone whose home isn’t fixed. Happy to raise it with local MPs if you put something together (I presume without a postcode you don’t have an MP either). There are a few canal residents on BlueSky.

Just for interest. Does a boat qualify for warm homes grants? I imagine no fixed postcode gets in the way.

I get several in my bedroom each year. If it’s chilly they will crawl onto your hand for warmth and you can just take them outside.
