Remaking what someone else does is actually OKAY as long as you make it your own. It’s the best way to learn. There comes a point where you’re not copying anymore, you’re just using tricks you’ve picked up over the years in different contexts.

Workflow cannot be taught. Following tutorials and/or shadowing an engineer is valuable, but nothing will teach you more about your process than making music yourself!

Be careful who you use as your distributor. Certain companies may have a yearly subscription w unlimited uploads, but come with many hidden fees that add up as you release. Others are pay per song, which also adds up
Do your research to see the best fit. Consider going local

Louder ≠ better. Because of the Fletcher-Munson curve, we perceive louder music as flatter on the EQ spectrum. i.e., the bass will “sound” better/bigger.
This perception might lead you to make unbalanced mixing choices that you wouldn’t otherwise. Mix on lower volumes!

When you get a new VST, spend 30 minutes going through all the presets and favoriting the ones you like the best. These 30 min will save you SO much time down the line when you’re searching for the right preset to tweak for your project.

If you’re an independent artist, chances are you don’t need a PR team. They’re costly and, unfortunately, don’t bring enough to the table besides a few blog placements and the occasional interview.
Invest that $ instead on ads and hiring a local marketing manager.

When working with singers, performance and energy is always more valuable than correct notes. You can fix notes at the mixing stage, but you can’t fix low energy

A common issue in cars is that the bass is too loud, and vocal clarity is reduced. But, in most modern cars, you can adjust the sound equalization (EQ) to fix these issues. Adjust the sliders while a song you know well is playing until it sounds right!

Louder doesn’t always mean better! Especially for small speakers like the ones on your iPhone. Small audio drivers have limits that, when pushed too far, will begin to distort the quality of audio. Larger speakers have a much higher ceiling, but can still distort if too loud

Don’t put speakers right up to walls or, especially, corners of a room—those places are where bass buildup is the worst. Instead:
For TV speakers, place them with space between them and the wall. For portable speakers, place them around 1/4 of the way between parallel walls.

By themselves, certain sounds/textures/instruments might feel strange. But production is about context & mixing is about balance. Does it go somewhere else in the song? Does it need one more layer? An effect? Depending on what you’re trying to accomplish, you can make it work.

Never, ever, EVER blast your headphones when listening to music. Even if you’re on the subway or somewhere loud. You’re permanently damaging your hearing every single time.
And at concerts, wear ear protection (like foam plugs) and do not stand next to the giant speakers.

Set your DAW to 48kHz sample rate by default—many producers have ditched 44.1. Some even go higher to 96, but 48 is the standard these days

Duplicating an audio track, then panning one left and one right does NOT make it stereo or wide. You need two different waveforms to give the perception of stereo width. E.g. Duplicating one guitar take and panning won’t work. Instead, record the part twice and pan hard L and R

If going for a highly compressed sound on a track, avoid using just one compressor with extreme settings. Try, instead, two compressors with different settings to spread out the workload. It’ll give you a smoother final compression

Don’t automate track volume! Instead, throw a gain plug-in at the end of your chain to automate. That way, you can adjust the track fader for mixing adjustments without it snapping to an automated value.
