Paying for municipal roads via property taxes creates the giant loophole of moving outside the city, yet it causes more driving, which increases city infrastructure costs.

What's good for one business is bad for everyone else in the city.

I wonder why they haven't tried emptying them more frequently, and working with the province to make sure nobody needs to dumpster dive to eat.

I'm really disappointed in Kinew's stance here, especially after making noise about predatory use of the Notwithstanding Clause. This is just populist posturing. He's got the political power to do more to protect vulnerable people, and this kind of rhetoric isn't actually helping anymore.

We have an Emma now! There's one more person on council that isn't hostile to changes that are well supported by data.

Winnipeg's bike mayor just got a gravel bike too. :) I know there's sometimes some contention between those of us who are transportation cyclists, and the rec folks, but all bikes are beautiful.

We already have single payer transportation in our road system, which incentivizes auto use that objectively makes our lives worse, and is the lion's share of our infrastructure deficit. Meanwhile transit is disincentivized.

It irks me to no end that we're burning money in admin & fare collection costs to make transit in Winnipeg a worse, and slower experience. It really feels like something that should be single payer.
June 24, 2025 at 7:17 PM
My beef with fare collection is that it's burning money in admin costs to make transit worse. We could generate a bunch of money for the city if we started tolling all the roads too, but for some reason that's seen as unreasonable.

Many months, and many amendments 😂

Durand-Wood talks about that in this article. If higher density still requires everyone to get in a car & drive across the city to get to jobs, shopping & leisure, you're not exactly making progress on improving city finances.

And to think, 4 years ago, telling people that we'd have a P&M with pedestrian crossing & as a right construction up to 4 plexes on most (many? some?) R1 lots Winnipeggers would lose their minds.
