Kavin has been living in a safe house for 14 months. He can’t work. Can’t return to Sri Lanka where his former boss has threatened his family. Just alone with his trauma.

And now? @teamlabouruk.bsky.social just announced migrant workers must wait 10 years instead of 5 for permanent status. Ten years of being trapped with an abusive employer. Ten years where reporting exploitation means losing everything.

A care worker was repeatedly raped by her manager but couldn’t report it without risking deportation.

One woman on a domestic worker visa worked 17-hour days for no pay, slept in a laundry room, ate leftovers, was verbally abused and hit. The government had approved her contract and her employer’s license. She was still enslaved.

The Skilled Worker visa. The Domestic Worker visa. The Seasonal Worker Scheme visa. The Health and Care Worker visa. All of them tie workers’ legal status to their employers, creating what experts call “huge dependencies” that lock people into exploitation.

This isn’t an isolated case. Thousands of migrant workers on UK work visas have been referred to the National Referral Mechanism as modern slavery victims.

When Kavin tried to leave, he couldn’t. The visa system gave him 60 days to find a new sponsor or face deportation. He became so desperate, he attempted suicide.
