"Bold".

Unlike Emerald Fennell everyone on this @backlisted.bsky.social podcast read the entire book, not just the first bit.

Give it a listen. It's good.

"They all agree wives aren't invited."

Deliciously unglamorous portrait of life at a London advertising agency in 1970, centred around the annual Christmas party. Includes some spectacular hairdos and some rather outmoded attitudes to, well, everything.

I think GDT really nailed my favourite scene from the book where the monster is reading Ozymandias out loud

Listening to two podcasters talking about Del Toro’s Frankenstein and while I don’t think you have to have read the book to watch the film I have an issue with people praising GDT’s faithfulness to the novel [side eye] whilst also praising him for “telling it from the monster’s perspective.”

Goodness me, I stayed up late reading and it’s already Partially Muscled Skeleton Screaming by the Perimeter Fence Day. Hope you’ve all been good this year!

#NowPlaying A lovely recommendation from @andrewmale.bsky.social arrived today from @lookingforthemagic.bsky.social via @brighterdayvinyl.bsky.social

A 1972 German prog-folk album that just floats along beautifully. Some primitive synth action & a woman with a great voice top things off nicely.

Reasons I keep looking/listening exhibit #5287

Beautiful timeless Breton folk that also manages to include a track that sounds like proto ‘This Heat’. For fans of the recent-ish Kristen Noguès & Dorothy Carter reissues. One of my fave discoveries of the year

A fun fact about the "sex cult" that Charles Guiteau joined and then got kicked out of is that it eventually became the Oneida silverware company.

Restored and remastered properly for the first time, Sister Irene O'Connor’s prescient 1973 psych-pop milestone is an all timer - tape saturated Christian hymns backed by hypnotic synth vamps and a tinny drum machine

Oh my, reading this review by @andrewmale.bsky.social has done me no favours! :) No, I said a few weeks back. No need. I have a perfectly decent copy. Listening to my crackly copy I'm thinking, I have to buy it. Jeepers though, what a fine album.

I was given it to review, and thought "So it's come to this - reduced to reviewing a chimpanzee's 'autobiography' ffs". Little did I suspect it was a work of genius.

This one is called 'Coins'.

Is anything noirer than a blackout? Than not knowing what you’ve done, or what you’re going to get for it? Blackout Noir is a brilliantly conceived programme on Criterion, thanks to @selfstyledsiren.bsky.social & @glennkenny.bsky.social. And Black Angel (1946) is aces, it really sucker punched me

Using this to say that if you’ve never read The @nyrb-imprints.bsky.social imprint of The Gate you are missing out on a) one of the masterpieces of Japanese literature and b) one of the great acts of literary translation, by William F. Sibley.

I blubbed on and off nearly all the way through, but especially during the final chapters, when he is reunited with Weissmuller one last time. Don't think I've wept so much while reading a book since Charlotte's Web.

The Starmer line on this is so funny.
The very obvious thing about the UK's *last five prime ministers* is the more the public saw of them, the more they despised them.

Young Wes might be OK wisecracking his way through 5 mins on GMB, but once the public realise he's a smug, condescending narcissist that waxy sheen will come off quick

Marc at @hivemindrecords.bandcamp.com is good people.
Delighted to get my copy of the gorgeous Yara Asmar album, and because he's a mensch, @hive_mind_records slipped in the new Wolfgang Pérez too 🙂

Me Cheeta is so good that it genuinely has you, a clever person, pondering whether an ape wrote it.
Was very pleased to find these autobiographies of two less talkative stars of the golden age of Hollywood in charity shops recently. Just finished "Me Cheeta", and it's great 😀
