Remembrance is an opportunity not just to honour the lives lost to war, whether brave combatants or civilian victims. It is also a chance to recommit to the cause of peace and freedom in the hope that one day war will be no more.

Straight from the cenotaph to Tavistock Square for the white poppy ceremony for peace. Happy to lay a poppy at the stone for conscientious objectors, so many of whom also have died as a result of war.

Alongside my poppy at the cenotaph this year, I’ll be wearing the red triangle to remember the liberation 80 years ago of humanists who were held in the camps wearing this badge like other political opponents of fascism. We must have courage to stand against fascism and for freedom in every age.

A great pleasure to attend the Inauguration Parade of the 1914 Sikhs, a ceremonial marching troop established to commemorate the Sikh soldiers who have served in the British army, today at Wellington Barracks. And everyone was grateful for an auspicious shower of rain to greet the happy occasion!

I am in London away from Juno this week but receive photos from home. This latest just too regal and yet I feel she is missing me! Emotional transference on my part or accurate perception?

At final #QEDCon a pleasure to speak on panel on Christian Nationalism with excellent @sianushka.bsky.social @noahlugeons.bsky.social & @aliceemmalouise.bsky.social Times are grim but if we work hard to analyse the problem & embrace the big picture cause of human freedom & equality, we can prevail!

One of the more minor features of BBC News’ general decline is the typos and bad grammar increasingly creeping in. These two are just from today but I see it so often now.

Roasting carrots from the garden. Together with cucumbers, asparagus, and green peppers, they are absolutely the things that have tasted the most different from shop-bought this year. Fresh and delicious!

Always a delight to welcome my counterpart from Scotland @frasersutherland.bsky.social to England. Hearing all about @humanistsociety.bsky.social and their great current work in Scotland campaigning for assisted dying and against compulsory religious worship in schools.

19th century humanist William Morris died #onthisday in 1896. A visionary artist, designer, writer, & poet who challenged the oppressive industrial society of his time. Let us celebrate his legacy & work to create a fairer, more equitable world for all!

What a fantastic evening at the @humanists.uk reception at #Lab25 Conference. Always a highlight to connect with so many supportive Labour politicians & activists who share our vision for a more rational, compassionate, & open society.

Interesting and timely @humanists.uk and @moreincommonuk.bsky.social panel discussion at #Lab25 on
threats to free expression in Britain. We mustn't allow the necessary protection of people from hatred to become a backdoor for censoring criticism of ideas.

Wouldn’t be a trip to Oxford without popping into the Ashmolean. Surely one of the best museums in the world. And there always seems to be an @humanists.uk member pottering about who says hello. (Today was no exception! A very nice guy who was across from Nottingham for the day on a coach trip!)

Home of humanism, #ConwayHall, opened its doors on this day, 1929. One of two surviving buildings in the UK built for the non-religious to gather and find community. 🧵https://heritage.humanists.uk/conway-hall/

On the need to unite around shared values of freedom, justice, and human rights when contesting the political beliefs of Christian nationalists – regardless of our religious or no-religious beliefs. My letter in the @theguardian.com. bit.ly/46yXet1

Thanks to Lid Dem humanists for hosting a great panel on the many threats to liberalism and humanism in the world today from authoritarianism to misinformation. I feel refortified by everyone’s commitment and optimism to fight back with human rights, democratic values, and a sense of rational hope.
