'The trustees use the Trump administration as cover to escalate their Zionist agenda. In an editorial dictated from ICE detention in April, Mahmoud Khalil accused Columbia of “la[ying] the groundwork for [his] abduction” by handing over thousands of pages of student records. Two weeks ago, an ICE official testified in court that the Trump administration uses lists compiled by Canary Mission to identify and, if possible, deport pro-Palestine activists on campus. Much of this has been coordinated through group chats like “Columbia Alumni for Israel,” which includes Columbia faculty and an associate dean who have not been disciplined and whom it is widely believed act as a conduit between Columbia, Canary Mission, and ICE. That chat also includes alumni like Victor Muslin, who is said to help run Canary Mission and has echoed Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant’s genocidal comparison of Palestinians to “human animals” by advocating for “the powers that be to squash [pro-Palestine students] like roaches.”'

In the past two years, Israel has detonated 100,000 tonnes of bombs—the equivalent of eight Hiroshima nuclear attacks—on a tiny strip of land with a trapped civilian population of over two million. While the spectre of a nuclear strike is firmly embedded in culture as the worst possible outcome, the nightmare of nightmares, modern weapons and warfare is more than sufficient to create incalculable calamities on par with that. We are seeing this daily. 92% of the buildings in Gaza have been entirely destroyed. Would it have been so much worse if it had been a nuke? Consider the fact that birth deficiencies and rates of leukemia and cancer in Iraq, post 2003-invasion, are worse than what was observed in Hiroshima. In Japan, rates of leukemia rose by 660% in the years following the bomb. In Falluja, it increased by 2,200%. The toxicity of war has never been greater, and we are in no way reckoning with the scope of the horror that’s been unleashed.

We cannot claim that we did not know. We have been silent for too long. For the sake of the lives of innocents and the safety of all the people of this land, Palestinians and Jews; for the sake of the return of the hostages; if we do not call to halt the war immediately, history will not forgive us. We will not forgive ourselves. It is our duty to act to stop the slaughter; it is our duty to save lives. It is our duty to save what can still be saved of this land’s future. The institutions of higher education in Israel must raise their voices, address their students and the public at large, look at reality directly and call things what they are – unspeakable actions being done in our name, with our own hands, that will ultimately result in destroying higher education in Israel and the entire society from within.

This has implications far beyond the Middle East. Throughout the past 50 years, actions by the state of Israel have been used to set a precedent for US global policy. The most significant example is the doctrine of “targeted killing,” that is, state-sanctioned assassination. In November 2000, Israel became the first state in the world to “openly acknowledge that it operated a policy of targeted killing,” wrote Nils Melzer, who served as United Nations Special Rapporteur on Torture, in 2009. Soon after, the United States moved “to openly adopt the method of targeted killing.” ... As with the adoption of “targeted killing,” the war crimes now being committed by Israel will become the new baseline for even greater crimes by the United States and other imperialist powers.
