I currently have a newsletter in which I write regularly about how societies devolve into authoritarianism & what that means right now in the US & around the world. It also features essays about my unsettled childhood in West Virginia. Soon, it will also include art, surprises, & links to resources.

I need Joyce Carol Oates to be mean to me online so I can get my life together

Yesterday, when Bovino announced ICE would be returning to Little Village today, some of us donated and fundraised to buy out street vendors in the neighborhood. This morning, volunteers hit the streets at 6:30 am, looking for vendors to buy out. Tamales make an excellent breakfast.

Imagine looking at the US free market health provision disaster and going ‘what this needs is more of the market side’.
Trump: "I want the money to go into an account for people where they buy their own health insurance. It's so good. The insurance will be better. It'll cost less. Everybody is gonna be happy. They're gonna feel like entrepreneurs. They're actually able to go out & negotiate their own insurance"

instead of saying this was good strategy, maybe senate dems should say: "the republicans were going to kill people by starving them to death, and because we aren't monsters, we decided to let this fight go. We'll keep fighting. Stop electing monsters."

Enjoy yourself this evening, DC!

No throwing sandwiches!

Or, hey, do that, if you want, it’s your party.
A reminder that I'll be at Kramers (aka, Kramerbooks) in Dupont Circle with @johnlingan.bsky.social on Tuesday 11/11 at 7pm to talk about his very fun book BACKBEATS: A HISTORY OF ROCK AND ROLL IN FIFTEEN DRUMMERS, on its publication day. Come hang out with us!

For those who donated to the work my friend, Kharkiv native Olga Shpak, is doing there and on the front lines: this photo is from the charity home for elderly city residents. A Shahed drone explosion nearby damaged the roof and cut the power. She’s using some of the money you gave for repairs. [1/2]

Come out to Kramers tomorrow (Tuesday, 11/11) at 7pm, when @johnlingan.bsky.social and I will talk about his wonderful new book BACKBEATS, which traces the arc of pop music through the lives and work of 15 drummers. Free, but please RSVP in the link, so they can brace themselves for our onslaught.

And again, we're not guaranteed to win, and we're not going to sit around hoping for a win. We need to be out there working—out doing the anti-authoritarian work in the streets that needs doing, pushing candidates and electeds to do more, building grassroots infrastructure. Working. Fighting.

Body my house
my horse my hound
what will I do
when you are fallen

Where will I sleep
How will I ride
What will I hunt

Where can I go
without my mount
all eager and quick
How will I know
in thicket ahead
is danger or treasure
when Body my good
bright dog is dead
