Some people feel that exams are necessary in high school merely because they had to take them themselves and they see it as some sort of rite of passage.

As a parent of a high school student and two recent high school students I feel that we do a disservice to some students by forcing them to write exams when they aren't going into situations post-secondary that require them to take exams.

I did have a couple of in-course quizzes for a few core concepts, but most of the assessed work was in the form of solo and group projects.

It was a fascinating discussion. I think we need to rethink exams. I taught for over 20 years in post-secondary and I found exams weren't a great evaluation method. My assessments tried to mimic the post-education environment as much as possible, and for that reason I administered no final exams.
