New numbers show ICE is devouring US law enforcement: 1 in 5 US marshals, 1 in 5 FBI agents, half of all DEA agents, and over two-thirds of all ATF agents are now assigned to ICE enforcement. These are agencies with critical jobs they're now NOT doing.

Here’s my write up on the most racist decision to come out of the Supreme Court in a while. The court approved of Trump’s racial profiling of Latinos with Brett Kavanaugh saying being harassed based on the color of your skin is “common sense.”
My latest in @thenation
The Supreme Court Just Gave the OK to Racial Profiling
The court’s ruling allowing ICE to resume its indiscriminate round-ups of LA’s Latino residents can only be described as one thing.

Why don’t you pry carrot cake out of my cold, dead hands and give us back Medicaid coverage for millions instead.

We should all be disgusted by the flood of anti-Muslim remarks spewed in the aftermath of Zohran Mamdani’s victory in the NYC mayoral primary — some blatant, others latent.

Shame on the members of Congress who have engaged in such bigotry and anyone who doesn’t challenge it.
Attacks on Muslims flood mainstream after Mamdani win
Openly racist rhetoric has become normalized at the highest levels of American politics.

I worry that escalating war with Iran will be used to whip up more fear and hate for non-white immigrants, particularly those of Arab descent, and be used for unjust deportations.

As an indication of the upside-down we are now living in, a Ukrainian friend who lives in Kyiv under the daily threat of aerial bombardment reached out to me today:

“Are you doing OK? I’ve been following the news about American universities and it sounds bad.” 🙃

Yep. I first heard this story while doing yard work.

I got a little weepy.
And a little hopeful, too.
Countless listeners have told us that this story from Bryan Stevenson made them cry and gave them hope for our country's future.

A lot of this stuff is just racial profiling—a two-class system where one group now must show their papers and risks constant detention/deportation/trafficking while the other is free to commit unlimited crime through what remains of the government

Harvard and a few other universities are leading in what will be a successful effort to protect an essential part of our democracy.

All must be prepared to resist efforts to stifle academic freedom.
Harvard has set an example for other higher-ed institutions - rejecting an unlawful and ham-handed attempt to stifle academic freedom, while taking steps to make sure students can benefit from an environment of intellectual inquiry, rigorous debate and mutual respect. Let’s hope others follow suit.

Mr. Abrego Garcia was illegally abducted by the Trump Admin and, by their own admission, wrongly deported to El Salvador. He shouldn’t have to spend another second away from his family.

I'm flying to El Salvador tomorrow morning to check on his condition and discuss his return.

Deleting Facebook from my home screen to try to wean myself off. It’s just a place where people go to scream into the darkness. Even when I agree, it doesn’t actually make me feel better.

Deleting X was an instant boost to my mental health. And I don’t miss it all.

Let’s see…

I got laid off today, with the rest of 18F.

18F was an elite federal software shop. We made gov't websites work better, more efficiently for the American people. We saved taxpayers from getting screwed over by contractors. And were fired for it.

We made this website to tell our story:

✨The lawyers need to see the actual court filings.✨

Yes, I know you summarized. Yes, I know your non-attorney readers don't care.

But we need to see the documents. The actual documents.

If you're pulling docs from PACER, use RECAP & give us a link. Please.

I honestly believe our most powerful position in a toxic time that feeds on cynicism, apathy,& despair is to genuinely care and act for a better world.

Cynicism is our enemy. We should check it, incl. on the left. It’s not intellectually superior. It’s the virus they’re trying to infect us with. NO
