Today I finally hit one of the very first submissions I learned, three years ago. A sort of arm Americana (?) from the scarf hold. Although it's not in the drawing, I think you're supposed to lock your feet together at the end there, to keep the arm from wriggling out.

I've had mixed results from trying to bring my friends to BJJ class, so I changed tactics: I booked a room at a local community center and invited a whole bunch of people to come try to kick my ass

In my almost 3 years of doing bjj I've only really hit three triangles (a fourth one was too shitty to count), but two of them were this week 😎

Two ways of defending against the Kimura when you're trapped in closed guard.

A 5 step illustration of the first Kimura defense. Once your opponent has secured a Kimura grip, reach your free arm around their body to grab the elbow that's on the mat. Pull the elbow to collapse and flatten opponent's body. From here I guess you could work your way out from the closed guard using your feet, but we didn't get that far in this session. 4 step illustration of the 2nd approach. Once the Kimura grip is locked in, move your same side leg up, so that your knee prevents your opponent from twisting/lifting your arm up. With the added leverage of your leg, you should be able to pull your arm out. If your opponent underhooks your exposed leg, sit your thigh down on their arm to trap it, and maybe go for a wrist lock if that's the kind of person you are.
