No, the argument “we know what is meant,” doesn’t fly. Tossing an “underage” in front of terms used to describe adults is a deliberate attempt to lessen the impact of the crime being described.

We need stop using (and calling out the media when they use it) the term “underage woman” instead of “girl” or “child” to refer to juvenile victims of predators. (This applies to males as well, although I don’t know when I have heard “underage man” used.)
