Please please please PLEASE keep making art. Even if it's not perfect. Even if you're new. Even if no one sees it. Keep. Going. The world is nothing without artists

I find my process for writing is never exactly the same twice! I try to follow passion, but then I have to lock in and keep going when it’s gone (or else there’s always some new shiny thing!).
TOPIC: Let's talk process. Do you start at the beginning of ideas and power through? Do you just work on whatever hits your mind? Are you a plotter or a pantser? Spill the beans (and give tips) here at #kidlitchat

Using AI to produce writing or art is like asking someone at the gym to lift weights for you.

The effort is the point.

Oof…I guess counting only the most solid ideas…

TBE: 3
TBW: 3
TBW (but in questionable limbo): 7
Only vague one-liners: um…a lot
Authors, we ask readers if they have a TBR…do you have a TBW (to be written) or a TBE (to be edited)?

TBE : 8
TBW : 9

(Not counting anything shorter than 25k or the number would be 20+ for each and only counting "solid" ideas I'm 100% sure I'll write)

My biggest goal is healthier personal pacing! I tend to go 100% all the time because I want to do all I can for my writing career, but I keep burning out. I don’t want to work so hard that I forget that I’m supposed to love this work. #kidlitchat
TOPIC: Resolutions time! What are your shiny new career goals for 2025 (the ones under your control)? Do you have a theme word for the year? How do you plan to hold yourself accountable? #kidlitchat

Building a novel’s magic system, also known as having the oddest internet search history. Including ”what is hair?”

Nothing like starting to plan a novel's second draft only to realize the last time you worked on a second draft was back in 2020...

Written tons of drafts since then! First drafts and nineteenth drafts and...but not second. This is going to be interesting.

I’ve been telling anyone who’ll listen lately about The Last Hope School for Magical Delinquents by Nicki Pau Preto!

Then, for YA, I loved The Bad Ones by Melissa Albert and Don’t Let the Forest In by CG Drews. I’ve got a dark supernatural book to brainstorm & these fuel me! #kidlitchat
TOPIC: Which children's books caught your attention in 2024? Which are still on your TBR list? #kidlitchat

There’s a kid out there who needs your book. Maybe to know they aren’t alone or that there’s more possible than they imagined. To learn something new, visit an old friend, or make a new one. Maybe they just need a smile on a tough day. There’s a kid out there who needs your book. Write for them.

I’ve been querying (and trying to distract myself from how stressful that is by working on making an audiobook).

And over the next 3 months, I’ll be querying but while working on draft 2 of my young YA project!
TOPIC: It's quarterly check-in time at #kidlitchat! Four times a year, we share what we've been up to (career-wise) for the past three months, and look ahead to the next three. (And just hanging in there totally counts!)

Starting planning work for draft 2 of my novel during the Christmas season was a WILD choice. I’m now tired for 2 reasons.

Assuming all fanfiction is written poorly really just shows you've never been caught in the chokehold of a 150k slowburn that changed the course of your life at 2:40am written by someone whose username has 4 Zs in it and they only wrote one fic and then vanished like an ethereal legend.

When a writer says they've outlined their story, what they really mean is they've envisioned 3-4 cool scenes they now need to somehow tie together into a plot

Always a good time to mention that my undergraduate thesis (which is a novel!) is available through OhioLINK! It's an AU #PeterPan origin story addressing the perception of mental illness in society and an argument for the literary merit of YA fiction. Check it out here: tinyurl.com/yagref4t

Y'all, I actually read some of a book today. Not a LOT but as someone who struggles to take breaks from writing and audio editing, even 10 minutes is a huge win. And your creative work NEEDS to be fed others' creative work. SO KEEP READING.

If you take a break from editing your audiobook so you can query your novel...does that count as a break? (or maybe that's why I'm very tired)

Hi, #kidlitchat! I’m a querying author of speculative YA fiction. I’ve written 10 original books at this point and am also developing my skills as an audiobook voice actor. Happy to get more involved in the kidlit community here now that I’m on Bluesky!
TOPIC: Hey, everyone--it's been a good year for #kidlitchat here on Bluesky, and the community is growing! Let's push some tables together, grab a slice of pie, pull up a chair and introduce (or re-introduce) ourselves.

Hard to post about the writing you’re working on when you’ve spent the last 2 months editing an audiobook for PRACTICE ONLY but here we are on a new app~
