This is the perfect example of why I’m so excited to vote for @drannieandrews.com for US Senate from SC. We need leaders who can help us translate heartbreaking data like this into action!
In 2010, the Supreme Court decided the Second Amendment applies to state and local governments, allowing states to enact more permissive gun laws.

Since then, there have been 6,000+ excess firearm deaths among children in states with the most permissive gun laws, according to a new study.

Heartbroken to learn a friend’s R21 was cancelled. She is studying LGBTQ health in South Carolina. Sadly she is not the only one getting news like this.
The crush of new grant cancellations hasn't let up.

If your grant was terminated (or your app was pulled) please use this Google Form👇 to submit details for tracking purposes.

Multiple advocacy efforts are moving forward, but we must must must know more about what grants were cancelled and why.

The 2025 South Carolina Maternal Morbidity and Mortality report is out. Unfortunately, showing big increases due to the 2021 delta wave of COVID-19. I’m grateful for the work of the committee and SCDPH and holding these families in my heart today.

What a loss. This is was the best way to check in (nationally) with pregnant women about pregnancy outcomes, access to prenatal care and health insurance, family planning, physical abuse, breastfeeding and infant care. If we aren’t measuring, we can’t improve care or outcomes
CDC shutters the PRAMS Program on maternal and Infant health. PRAMS is a federal data collection system designed to identify groups of women and infants at high risk for health problems that has been running since 1988 #ReproSky 🩺 🛟

Yes, Medicaid is a health program. But it’s also a major economic driver. Cuts to Medicaid funding will lead to not only poor health but also job losses. Doctors and nurses of course, but also pharmacy, laboratory, dietary, environmental services, purchasing and administration.
Nearly half of all births are paid for by Medicaid. With states rolling back abortion access, birth rates increasing, and infant mortality rates also increasing, it makes no sense to cut public health workers dedicated to reducing maternal and infant death. www.propublica.org/article/trum...

Medical research funding is usually both public (NIH) and private (pharma), i.e. the TV drug ads

Preterm birth & preeclampsia research is almost entirely non-industry

Most pharmaceutical companies avoid pregnant patients like the plague.

So freezing NIH essentially freezes our field

I am attending #SMFM25 and missing colleagues from NIH and CDC who have a travel ban. But I as I listen to brilliant presentations from British, Egyptian and French colleagues, I am thankfully reminded women’s health research is an international effort. Lots of good work happening around the world.

Oh no. Anyone with insight into what’s happening today at NIH? Let’s hope this is a temporary part of the transition.

Statewide maternal mortality review committees often do not review deaths in pregnancy from homicide, suicide and other accidental trauma (pregnancy associated deaths). These tragedies are under-studied and often not included in prevention efforts.
