The right coopting "woke" and changing it to a culture war watchword needs to be completely rejected by the left. Instead, we have adopted it by MAGA's definition and are using it in the discourse, and I believe that needs to stop.
When I first started seeing the word "woke," it was in Luvvie Ajayi's blog, I believe during Trump's first term. What I took it to mean in context was to stay vigilant and be aware that your rights are in danger.
Now here is what Wikipedia gives us: "Woke is an adjective derived from African-American English used since the 1930s or earlier to refer to awareness of racial prejudice and discrimination, often in the construction 'stay woke.' [More recently], 'woke' came to be used to refer to a broader awareness of social inequalities such as sexism and denial of LGBTQ rights."
"Woke" never meant litterboxes in classrooms for children identifying as cats, but that's how MAGA uses it. I think that pundits and politicians, specifically the white ones, need to stop legitimizing the MAGA definition, which is as a pejorative for all identity/culture issues of concern to people on the American left. It boggles my mind that we have adopted the word by their definition in the public discourse. Why the fuck did we do that? They appropriated it as an insult and now we are using their meaning?
