Scientific societies should be leading the charge when it comes to advocating for science funding, federal scientific employees, and academic freedom in this moment.

I am paying close attention who is and who isn’t, and making decisions about membership and future conference attendance accordingly.

Urine drug screens are some of the most inaccurate tests in medicine, that even healthcare professionals frequently misinterpret or just don’t understand.

Yet we let nonmedical/nonscientific people in politics and law enforcement use them to punish people and even take children from their mothers.

This is insane. $40 billion cut to HHS. 40% of NIH budget will be gone, 27 institutes will shrink down to 8. 44% of CDC budget will disappear, all work on chronic diseases will cease. Head Start will be eliminated.

SO PEOPLE WILL DIE because we want to give billionaires their tax cuts.
Internal budget document reveals extent of Trump’s proposed health cuts
HHS would be asked to absorb a $40 billion cut, about one-third of its discretionary budget.

Specifically, I experienced censorship in the reporting of our research because of agency concerns that it did not appear to fully support preconceived narratives of my agency’s leadership about ultra-processed food addiction.

A tricky thing about modern society is that no one has any idea when they don’t die.

Like, the number of lives saved by controlling air pollution in America is probably over 200,000 per year, but the number of people who think their life was saved by controlling air pollution is zero.

Police in Rhode Island are saying someone died from fentanyl-laced cannabis based on preliminary drug testing done by the police, and I just want people to remember law enforcement is not qualified to perform drug testing or determine cause of death. It helps nobody to create unfounded drug panics.

I want to point out two things about yesterday's HHS cuts
1- a FDA office was cut that's completely funded by tobacco settlement dollars. The cut saved the US $0 but cost scientists their jobs & will result in unsafe/unregulated products on store shelves
2- state & local health depts will be harmed

This is, in large part, pandemic revenge.

As far as these oligarchs are concerned, all science does is tell them stuff they cannot do.

They can't keep spewing carbon.

They can't keep businesses open as usual when millions are dying.

They have concluded that research is the enemy of profit.

These are the divisions eliminated in CDC. Apparently the man who claims he’s going to address chronic conditions does not want smoking or miner’s health addressed, or lead poisoning, to name just a few.

Because he’s not really trying to address chronic illness. He just wants to remove vaccines.
