There are plenty of gay and bi players in professional men's sports, but they are closeted by institutional homophobia and it really sucks.

Women's sports show how well it could work and how fun and sweet it is, both when they play on the same teams and when they are rivals.

The homophobic environments are certainly part of it but he talks about how clear it was that he would get blackballed from the NFL as soon as anyone found out (Michael Sam, etc). This is an institutional problem that leagues could solve TOMORROW if they wanted to.

I have thoughts on why this doesn't happen in men's sports beyond the obvious (homophobic environments starting from birth), if anyone is interested I would read RK Russell's memoir about being gay in the NFL.

I mean, yeah. That's the entire point? Heated Rivalry, the book, is about loneliness and isolation and shoving yourself so deeply in the closet that you can't see anything outside of it, except you can't deny yourself one fundamental sweetness. The one that allows you to express your true self.

Sex is part of human behavior, and our attitudes towards sex, as well as the kinds of sex we desire and why we find it desirable, all inform who we are. Why would you dismiss that aspect of character-building if you're a writer or creator, especially of love stories? Why wouldn't you want to use it?

Why is sex-as-punishment or sex-as-suffering elevated as art, but as soon as you see characters having sex for the pure pleasure of it, it's immediately dismissed? Why do we have so many graphic depictions of sexual assault and sexual trauma and so very few of sexual fulfillment? Rly makes u think

"Why are they boning already"--have you lived such an unspeakably sheltered life that you've never had a bad-idea hookup and then caught feelings? Or had a friend go through this? Or, like, read about it??

Where's the romance. WHERE'S THE ROMANCE. I am screaming and yanking on my hair. Did you miss the parts in which they're flirting incessantly? When Shane checks in after Ilya suffers the most devastating defeat of his life? Shane covering for an overwhelmed Ilya during their first press conference?
