🤩 That's us! Look at that handsome bird! Let's see... Tarāpuka? Tarāpunga? Koekoeā? Toroa? Who else is shouty?
I decided to get behind #Birdoftheyear2025 so I've written a guide and done some drawings for 9 underappreciated birds. Here's one for hākoakoa #skua since I was inspired by @hakoakoa-boty.bsky.social
The guide comes out tomorrow. Can you guess which other birds are on my list?

Bird books say we're "large, noisy and aggressive” to which we say: you got a problem with that? Somebody’s gotta clean up the carcasses and sort the weak from the strong. Vote Hākoakoa Subantarctic Skua for Bird of the Year. #skua #forestandbird #birdoftheyear2025

Half of those rich Americans will shit a brick when they realise they've moved to the Deep Dark Woods of the empire, where the locals don't give a fuck who you are, how much money you have, or that you think you're special. And Amazon rarely delivers.

Hey NZ! Lights or no? Stoked to see my take on the question is The Spinoff's most popular story right now. I'm against 'em, but cheap solar ain't gonna stop. I miss the dark arleady
Lights at a hut are like togs in a sauna
Around the country, DOC is upgrading backcountry huts with solar panels and electric lights. But as technology evolves, are we losing something special?

Last time the Marines were deployed on US soil they shot and killed an American citizen named Esequiel Hernández, Jr. on May 20, 1997. Clinton was playing Drug War games. The Marines were in full battlefield camo. Esequiel, high school kid, was herding his goats along the Rio Grande. RIP

Phoenix, my dear hometown. No history, no trees. Just freeways, swimming pools, and pure uncut American id
I coach 5-6 year-olds in soccer and 7-8 year-olds in basketball in suburban Phoenix, and let me tell you, the games don't look like they did 30 years ago. The skill level is so extraordinarily high that kids who haven't started playing by 6 are almost too far behind to catch up.
