The RC cola of toku subs (He/Him/That Dude)

~Saving a life means saving the future.~
Can be toku-related, but doesn't have to be. I just need something that'll keep my energy and adrenaline up when running. Thanks!

No, the remaining order for me is...

> Yakuza 6

> Judgment

> Yakuza 7: LAD

> Lost Judgment

> Gaiden

> LAD: Infinite Wealth

> Pirate Yakuza

Still got a long way to go.

It wears its heart on its sleeve maybe too much, but gosh dangit I appreciate the sentimentality.

Only one more game to get through before I finish Kiryu's saga, and as I understand it it shouldn't take nearly as long as this one to finish (almost 75 hours for Yakuza 5!) I'm ready! ...I think.

The finale genuinely made me shed a tear, before being really stunned at the ending. Crazy they went four years between this and Yakuza 6. Incredible cliffhanger.

All of this adds up to me being on the "loved it" side of Yakuza 5 opinions. Probably my favorite.
February 15, 2025 at 4:48 PM
The main plot itself has a lot of... ehhhhhhh moments in it, but by that same token when it hits it HITS. Kiryu and Shinada's sections are bangers, I didn't mind the Haruka stuff, and the later plot developments in the second half were really surprising. I'd only say Saejima's was weak.
February 15, 2025 at 4:44 PM
Besides, Yakuza 5 has maybe my favorite combat in the series. I loved all of the characters' styles in this game.

The hostesses were much better designed than in Y3 or Y4. Though I'm disappointed in the lack of revelations.
February 15, 2025 at 4:43 PM
The Road to Fame was probably the weakest for me, but that's more out of it feeling repetitive and overly long rather than it being "bad".

I also see criticism for the encounter rate, but if you walk past the enemies or use the beads you can get around the enemies.
February 15, 2025 at 4:41 PM
All of the side stories of the characters were really fun. My favorite might honestly be Hunter and Killer, but Shinada's Cost of a Swing was a blast too (which I did not expect), and the racing sections of Taxi Driver were also a ton of fun.

This game straight-up changes genres in the middle, and I can see why people would be very put off by that. Yakuza 5 almost demands you at least take a look at the side content.

The good news is that Yakuza 5's side content is peak.
February 15, 2025 at 4:38 PM
The amount of freedom the series gives you to interact with it at your own pace is arguably one of the key selling points.

And Yakuza 5 just as arguably breaks that. The amount of side content in the game that the game has to explain and demo IN THE MAIN PLOT is very high.
February 15, 2025 at 4:36 PM
See, one of Yakuza's key facets is the separation of the main plot and the side content. If someone wants to go through the main plot and not engage with the side content, they can. If someone wants to dick around for hours in the process, they can.
February 15, 2025 at 4:33 PM
So Yakuza 5 is maybe the single most divisive entry in the series, simply for its ambitiousness.

This game is CHONKY. Five characters, five maps, five EVERYTHING... it makes a game that's bursting with content. Perhaps to the game's detriment.
February 15, 2025 at 4:32 PM
Yeah. On one hand it's a shame that the show's legacy will probably be reduced to that last quarter... but on the other hand, it's telling toward the rest of the show's quality.
February 14, 2025 at 4:51 PM
But by the same token it does do a lot of stuff right, such as character dynamics, energy, and action scenes that I think it might find itself a cult classic in a similar way that Carranger ended up being back in the day. I'm excited to see what Gozyuger takes from this show going forward!

I think Boonboomger is a show people will undervalue with time. It's borderline too simple for most of the show, and being surrounded by the experimental (and grand) shows around it, it only really stands out by NOT being those shows.
February 14, 2025 at 4:23 PM
- Set up small details that payoff later down the road.

- Consequentially, have very strong final quarters/endgames that go in initially unexpected directions.

Thus, my placement for Boonboomger is very fittingly one spot below Dynaman (as Dynaman's middle section is stronger IMO.)
February 14, 2025 at 4:18 PM
Near the start of Boonboomger, I made a post saying I got Dynaman vibes from the show. And to the very end I stand by that. Both shows:

- Start very simple.

- Are very, very action-heavy.

- Weird pacing on plots.

- Slowly add details to the world.

It's like... we were being teased on stuff constantly, so seeing the show actually GO to the lengths it did and HIT as hard as it did retroactively brings some elements up for me. Crazy good final arc, finale was solid.
February 14, 2025 at 4:12 PM
So the good news is once the show starts to actually feel like it's going somewhere with a point in the second half, it REALLY feels like the show comes together in a way I wasn't expecting.

I understand if the final quarter tone shift didn't fit for some, but I thought it was interesting.
