The podcast that finally got me to read Wuthering Heights (I read all the other Brontë books but had always bounced off WH before I got Patricia Routledge to read it to me) - thank you!

Juicy is increasingly used to describe some types of craft beer. I never know quite what they're getting at.
November 29, 2025 at 1:26 PM
Crunchy is ok if you're talking about a sugar topping, less so for the whole bun. Juicy is plain weird - I can see what they mean but am struggling to find an English term. Soft?

Or she could do a modest bit of equity release to fund the tax - which may not be levied until death/sale in any case (the details aren't out yet)

As a constituent of ZS, I can see the funny side but I'm also pretty angry.

In that particular example, old-fashioned machine translation wouldn't have confused vicious and viscous... (AI presumably made some weird assumptions)

Son has an inset day today and I thought we might pop to IKEA. That is a bad idea, isn't it?

Seconding this, please - and still wishing for a system of micro payments so I can read specific articles while supporting journalists!

Full marks for use of "has been paid" instead of "has earned"!

Have you read Grief is The Thing With Feathers, by Max Porter? It's not a lot like your story but it is about a crow...

Ok, I may have invented soproon, but tenoroon definitely exists, as does altoon

The loss of the wider bassoon family is a loss to humanity. Tenoroon. Soproon.

I agree it's not a great idea. But did you see how many candidates there were at the NT AGM this year? Far more onerous than choosing which political candidate to vote for. I was grateful for a quick "stop the Restore Trust nonsense" option.
November 9, 2025 at 10:55 PM
I liked Quick Vote this year because there was an overwhelming number of candidates. I'm broadly happy with how the NT is being run and want to keep the Restore Trust nonsense far away. My takeaway from your thread is that RT did better than I expected.

They look great! I just ordered a T-shirt for my son but I didn't see any brightly coloured options on the Redbubble page :-(

Thanks Glen - I've never yet regretted piping up in conversations such as these, even if it doesn't lead to anything directly! I hope your stable is now bigger.

I translate classical music writing from French to English, so if you ever need that kind of writing, give me a shout!

Great minds...

I definitely recommend Backlisted anyway, but it might not be sufficiently theory-laden for you

Last year Transport West Midlands offered free bus travel after 7pm in the run-up to Christmas. And this half term there is free bus travel for (some) parents. Not perfect but it's something.

Pegasuskaffee, all one word, suggests German to me

I had a bloody awful time coping at home with a six-year-old, and never want to do it again. I also had a shielding husband, though, so was very relieved when child stopped going to the germ factory every day. Lockdown/school closure seemed like the least worst option at the time.
