I understand that it is distressing to our neighbors to witness the public struggle that our homeless neighbors endure. It is even more distressing to be homeless. If we truly wish to end homelessness the solution is not to hide homelessness from view, rather the proven solution is to move beyond our own discomfort and help our homeless neighbors. Most of us claim compassion and grace for the poor as core values. Criminalizing, shaming and casting out our most vulnerable neighbors only makes us hypocrites. Homelessness is not simple. Most residents of Lansing are one crisis away from homelessness, with homelessness representing anything from couch surfing to living on the street. Homelessness can result from unemployment, PTSD, mental health struggles, discrimination in housing, addiction, domestic violence and more. Many of these circumstances are both a cause and a symptom and make utilizing shelters traumatic. Clearing encampments does nothing to get to the root of homelessness. Best practices recommend wraparound services at the site of an encampment to get to the root of homelessness and create stability while we transition our neighbors to permanent housing. Seizing what few personal belongings our homeless neighbors carry, uprooting them on repeat, and breaking up the communities they have built only makes it harder to break the cycle of homelessness and build stability. Reminder that words matter. You can’t “deport” a US citizen. You might be kidnapping, disappearing, exiling, expelling, illegally removing, etc., but you’re not “deporting” a US citizen.

Stop calling it deporting, so MAYBE more Americans will get it. "Deporting" is sending someone back, after due process, to the country they came from, where they arrive a free person. This is human trafficking to a foreign torture prison for the rest of their lives. GET THE LANGUAGE RIGHT.
