Deleted my account on the other site, setting up over here! I'm a PhD student at the University of Maryland School of Social Work looking at how women fill the gaps in medical care and research by turning to one another - particularly in menopause, LGBTQ+ health, and gender-affirming care.

If you are a chair of a department or supervise grad students, it might be important to collaborate with your colleagues on ways to strategize when a "problem essay" comes down the pike. It's one small way of protecting each other.

every trans person i see post about the OU suspension knows that the suspended target is trans & a grad student, & has an innate awareness that this is about purging trans employees. every cis person i see thinks the target is a rando professor & that this is about giving conservatives good grades

It’s blowing my mind that schools, universities, public services would run headlong into this. We spent 15 years documenting black boxes. This is a black box in a black hole!
I don't understand how anyone can watch how blatantly Grok is manipulated to answer the way ownership desires it to and then act like the other LLM chatbots couldn't possibly be similarly but less obviously compromised to produce responses in whatever way corporate interests and priorities dictate.

Such a well-considered post - a colleague and I are leading a class discussion on AI ethics in teaching next month, and this will definitely be a reading
Some teachers are using AI to grade and few are talking about it. Scantrons are one thing, but automating grading, feedback, and assessing written work with AI poses massive ethical challenges and should not become the default or go to choice in education.

1/3 The mask many women have worn for decades rarely survives perimenopause.
Brain fog creeps in. Tasks unravel. Emotional regulation slips. Sensory overwhelm spikes.
What looked like competence was masking. When hormones shift, the mask breaks.

Reading the circuit court opinion in Chiles v Salazar and just couldn’t get past this statement where she asserts that the skill required to facilitate her sessions is roughly on par with that of an undergrad who has taken an intro to psychology course.

Medical institutions treat trans people as a population to surveil, manage, and dissect, rather than as people to assist or treat with basic dignity.
Oslo University Hospital caught using trans patients' journals for research purposes:
- Without the patients' consent to participate in research
- Affecting minors
- 1700 of them
- Taking highly sensitive information from said journals

This is a HUGE breach.
Tidligere i år meldte vi et forskningsprosjekt til redelighetsutvalget ved OUS og UiO.

Nå er forskerne felt for alvorlige brudd på forskningsetiske normer.

One of the fundamental truths we need to acknowledge in this moment is that domestic violence is where fascists learned how to get away with their violence.

“What did you do to provoke him?” is exactly what victims hear when they try to seek help in an abusive relationship.
Y'all who keep lecturing protesters to "not give them an excuse" need to pause for a minute. Imagine yourself telling a DV victim, "Be sure not to mouth off or make any mistakes so he won't hit you. Don't give him an excuse! It's what he wants!" That's what you fools sound like.

To the extent that there’s a profit function, it’s often more in creating dread among the population so that the rich and powerful can bully them into doing whatever they want.
One of the hardest-to-hear kinds of responses to my new story are premised on ICE detention being motivated by profit—and in part, it is—or on cheap or free forced labor—again, some is. But these detention centers also cost millions and now billions to run. Profit is not a top motive here.
The Abuses at ICE Detention Centers Fulfill a Trump Campaign Promise
Mass detention isn’t merely a step along the way to achieving Trump’s goal of mass deportation. Mass detention is also the goal.

Queer women will be hit especially hard by the incoming Medicaid cuts and restrictions in Trump's tax law.

That includes Sara Habein, a mother of two living in northern Montana, who recently learned that she has cysts in her brain.

Read her story in the latest from me and @chabeli.bsky.social
Over a million queer women rely on Medicaid. What happens if they lose it?
Lesbian and bisexual women are more likely to be low-income, more likely to be parents and more likely to rely on Medicaid. They could fall through the cracks of Trump’s new tax law.

It’s worth noting however that civil commitment is primarily a state level process. There is no federal infrastructure at scale for what he describes, which begs a series of increasingly disturbing questions about how this will be carried out.

Involuntary “treatment” does not work. What it does do is permanently alienate people with addictions from potential treatment providers, drives up overdose deaths and maximizes “revolving door” use of facilities such that people who are ready to make a change and want treatment can’t get a bed.

“banning pornography” is bad on its own but it is imperative that everyone understand that these people consider the very existence of queer people to be pornographic

they consider the most chaste depiction of a queer relationship, or an openly trans person, to be porn and they want it banned
You don’t have to like, approve of, or engage with porn and nsfw work to see how right wing extremists are using fear and stigma around smut to ban queer people from public life, define “good” sex as only between married people for procreation, and otherwise further force white supremacy on everyone

Authoritarians love "Gen AI" because it
- Sounds confident even when factually wrong
- Broadly conforms to & reproduces their biases, off the shelf
- Lets them create bespoke realities (text, audio, moving & still image) which agree w/ their biases
- Degrades trust in knowledge/evidence/expertise…

I'm not trying to make myself happy. I am trying to communicate what my positionality in a patriarchal hierarchy is.

The queer academy and the discourses it's spawned have been such a fucking disaster for (trans)feminism.

Many people seem to only be able to "include" trans women if everyone is welcome, if gender itself ceases to hold any meaning.

I'd like for that to happen, too, but in this world, this patriarchal world, gender subjects trans women to misogyny, womanizes us.

Do you believe that?
Do you think trans women are women in a "gender is fake, words mean nothing" way or in a "trans women are women" way.
