In France, the Moon was already totally eclipsed at moonrise making it difficult to spot in the twilight glow.

The @vrubinobs.bsky.social has a seismometer inside the pier which is supporting the telescope. Out of curiosity I had a look at the data after the mag 8.8 earthquake that occurred in Kamchatka on July 29th and to my surprise I got the following !

That's all I could get today from the solar eclipse through the clouds in Haute-Savoie. There is a sunspot near the edge at 10 o'clock.

These rectangular pads are the permanent magnets of the linear motor drives of the Vera C. Rubin Observatory Telescope Mount which is able to point toward any celestial position with a very high speed (up to 10.5 deg/s in azimuth).

We had a 3 day workshop at @ccin2p3.bsky.social to discuss where we are and what remains to be done in order to process @vrubinobs.bsky.social data in the 3 data facilities in the US, France and UK.
A good opportunity to have a look to the CC-IN2P3 computer room #nostalgia

Looking at my photo from Chile I find this good example of wind erosion. We were around 4500 m above sea level in the Atacama Altiplano close to the border between Chile and Argentina.

I did a few tests of an APN Sony A7s + Samyang 135mm f2 and an astro duo narrowband filter (enhancing Halpha and OIII lines).
Here is the result on the Orion region with the Orion nebula, the Horse Head, the Flame and a part of the Barnard's Loop.

The partial eclipse of the Moon 2 days ago from La Serena (Chile).
Shot with a bridge camera SONY RX10 and its super zoom. I love this camera 📷

Fun fact: the system supporting the
@vrubinobs.bsky.social secondary mirror is an active component designed to compensate any vibration in order to keep the mirror in position. And it is so sensitive that it is acting like a seismometer.

Yesterday there was a lot of haze but I could see the Sun through it, so I decided to try to use the haze as a solar filter. I was surprised to get so many sunspots with 1 single shot !

The sky in Chile is something you can't even imagine until you see it with your own eyes. I was in the valley of Rio Hurtado this week-end and this is what I had right above my head.

The enormous sunspot AR3780 was easily visible at sunset today. Another group of sunspots, not visible in this picture, released a powerful X1.3 flare yesterday that may triggers auroras.

It is difficult to imagine it but the

People @vrubinobs.bsky.social are busy installing the actuators inside the mirror cell supporting the 8.4 m mirror. These actuators maintain the mirror at its exact position and compensate for gravity forces when the telescope mount is moving.

Just received this book on Fritz Zwicky. Among other things, his reasoning about the Coma galaxy cluster, leading to the evidence of the existence of dark matter, has always fascinated me !

T Coronae Borealis (T CrB) is a symbiotic recurrent nova expected to outburst within the next 6 months. Hoping to record this event, I did some preliminary observations to measure its magnitude before the outburst. Here is an annotated image I took on March with a Sloan i filter.

Last week I was in California and was lucky to see this Great Blue Heron catching a gopher (the gopher was less lucky though...). It was then able to swallow it in 1 piece... Gloup !
