Chuckling at this nugget in the new Charles Sumner biography – this about his father Pinckney.

Ostensibly, Boston Latin was a public school, and open to any white male student who passed the exam. But in practice, its students were the children of wealthy elites. The school absorbed a far greater per-pupil proportion of taxpayer dollars than the rest of the common schools in Boston, and it excluded Black students completely. Pinckney Sumner resented the system of private schools and the Latin School. A graduate of Phillips Academy, he saw firsthand how elite schools created class divisions in the young republic, undermining the egalitarian val- ues of the American Revolution. He also remembered being kicked out of Phillips briefly because his father had missed tuition payments. In a series of anonymous letters to the Boston Yankee, a local paper, Pinckney Sumner vented his frustration. "The Town Schools ... are the poor man's best birthright," he asserted in one letter. "In the country ... they make no invidious distinction between an English and a Latin school," he pointed out in another. These were "the feelings of a parent, whose humble means allow him not to look to any other source of instruction for an infant numerous family than what is afforded by the Town Schools."
