Scarlet Empress is a visually stunning film - possibly Sternberg’s crowning achievement (accidental pun).
The wedding scene in particular is extraordinary, with Dietrich‘s breathing visualized by a fluttering candle. Don’t miss this one!

Thank You ! I look for recommendations from an earlier generation of critics. I believe sensibilities have changed dramatically. Younger critics seem to place less value on traditional narratives. Writers likely find a better and more lucrative home in TV series.

Historically, post Ronald Reagan - Village Voice was loud, emotional and more importantly conscious and aware.
