Research Article ‘Just get a clearer idea of who I am’: LGBTQIA+ people’s experiences of abortion care in Aotearoa New Zealand following law reform George Parker,Suzanne Miller,Sally Baddock,Elizabeth Kerekere &Chelsea D’Cruz Abstract Sexual and reproductive healthcare (SRH) is recognised internationally as a human right, but inequities exist in both access to, and outcomes from, SRH in some populations. LGBTQIA+ people accessing abortion services can have harmful experiences related to embedded norms that construct abortion care as being for cisgender heterosexual women. In Aotearoa New Zealand, legislative reform has decriminalised and liberalised abortion care to improve access and reduce outcome inequities. We conducted semi-structured interviews with ten LGBTQIA+ abortion service users, aiming to understand from them what constitutes safe and accessible abortion care, and to examine how well newly reformed abortion services are serving this community. To meet LGBTQIA+ people’s needs, abortion services should continue to offer flexible and multiple pathways into and through care but also need to develop strategies to address cis-heteronormativities across all service levels.

Kia ora koutou Prime Minister and the Coalition Government We are writing this letter to express our concern at the recent appointment of Simeon Brown to Minister of Health. The Minister of Health is responsible for overseeing abortion care in Aotearoa New Zealand. Given the promise that was forced out of you, Prime Minister Luxon, during the 2023 election not to curtail access to abortion, it seems like a provocation to appoint Mr Brown to this role given he has been an anti-abortion advocate for his entire adult life. While a student at the University of Auckland, Mr Brown was the President of ProLife Auckland and successfully affiliated the group with the Auckland University Students’ Association. While in Parliament, Mr Brown voted against the Abortion Legislation Act 2020 at its first, second and final reading. Mr Brown made “no apology” for his opposition to reform, instead introducing a Supplementary Order Paper proposing to track New Zealand women’s fertility by recording the number of abortions and live births a person had. Mr Brown also voted against the Contraception, Sterilisation and Abortion (Safe Areas) Amendment Act 2022 at all three readings. In 2022, Mr Brown celebrated the decision of the Supreme Court of the United States in Dobbs v Jackson Women’s Health, which curtailed abortion rights in America. Given Mr Brown’s persistent opposition to New Zealanders’ bodily autonomy in the face of massive public support for abortion – 78 per cent of New Zealanders support the right to an abortion – his appointment leaves us concerned and perplexed about the state of affairs. How can you, Prime Minister, assure women across Aotearoa New Zealand that their access to healthcare will not be affected given Mr Brown’s personal, ideological views about women’s private medical decisions? And how can we trust the promise you made that abortion law, access and funding would not change under your government? We look forward to receiving your res…
