The funny thing is that despite burning 4000+ calories per day (6k on one day) during this trip, I came back and had gained weight. Those second dinners and late night konbini snacks add up.

I had breakfast the next morning at the Narita McDonalds.

Then during the 14 hour flight Swiss Air sent us off with soba noodles, matcha cake, chicken katsu and stir fried udon noodles. Not at all bad.

Twenty-five years to build an airport and they still haven’t figured out decent transportation to get there.

It’s faster to get to Narita which is twice as far from the city. It was faster for me to fly here from Zürich than it is to get home.

Also, shout out […]

The sushi disaster in Nagoya needed a do-over so because I was around the corner I went to Ginzo in Akihabara. https://maps.app.goo.gl/pJw8AEAYv24Bu8Fb6

After 36k of cycling through Tokyo I crushed one *nama* after another and had my fill of sushi (and cured cod […]

Ah, I forgot yesterday's late yakiniku dinner in a back alley of Shibuya. https://maps.app.goo.gl/1h448szEfVKPbhPp6

The staff was gruff but very attentive and next to me a group of Japanese women were eating boisterously while making grunting noises. I think that […]

Then I figured I had cycled pretty far and had to bring the bike back (no Sangenjaya this time unfortunately).

I turned around and made my way back via the Blue Bottle at Roppongi. The ambience here was perfect as was the coffee. Being repeatedly harassed for […]

Then I rented a bike and after some 45 minutes of cycling to Omotesando, it was time for second breakfast at Bread, Espresso &. https://maps.app.goo.gl/uNsjAVjzFTE8w1m28

A decent coffee and a lovely breakfast toast with somewhat fancier accoutrements. I got to […]

The next day I had coffee and breakfast at Westside Coffee. https://maps.app.goo.gl/mk91Z44DALm8fRut5

Again the coffee and service were immaculate. Yes, Basque Cheesecake can be breakfast. Maybe even, it's the only breakfast that counts.

And after the Soba I found myself at this charming little coffee bar Matenrou. https://maps.app.goo.gl/q8Er7azBipsEqVUJ6

The coffee and the people there were stellar. A true gem of the neighbourhood and worth coming out to this part of town for all by itself.

Just before that I had to wade through the utter pandemonium in Asakusa and found some peace and quiet at Alchemist where I also picked up some coffee beans.

The coffee and ambience were both excellent as is to be expected.

Getting settled in Tokyo and after a bit of aimless wandering and I ended up at this soba place in east Nihonbashi. https://maps.app.goo.gl/HJQCM17SkxsY4Vb79

The kids who work it are by the sound of them all Thai but they make a mean noodle and tempura.

The next morning I was set on breakfast but it turns out that every good breakfast place has a queue in front of it and the ones without a queue are…

Komeda's Coffee sat me immediately and it wasn't great. For food you'd be better off grabbing sandwiches and […]

In Nagoya I went to a conveyor belt sushi restaurant because TikTok had recommended it to me. Kura Sushi is nothing if not an experience and the cheapness of the sushi draws a very young crowd.

That's pretty much everything I can say about it because it's exactly […]

In Shingu there wasn't that much to do after visiting the shrine other than to wander about a bit trying to find places that were open. I needed to be on the last fast train to Nagoya at 17:31.

I found one truly excellent bakery that also made a great espresso […]

This is and remains a goddamn miracle. Nagoya to Tokyo in one and a half hours by train.

Not so much a miracle are the ticket machines that will not sell you the correct tickets to take the Nozomi. Something which they apparently can't fix so they put an English […]

I was given some onigiri and a lemon from my host's garden for the road and then after I completed my final mountain passes of this trek, I received the meal that I had been looking forward to a lot.

In Kumano City just after the city entrance, there's a Mos […]

Breakfast the next day was equally lovely with a diverse assortment of home baked rolls, bread and these hilarious rice cakes.

Along with the usual vegetables, eggs, sausages, banana and yoghurt.
November 30, 2025 at 1:47 AM
My host offered to cook for me which I gladly took her up on because this entire stretch of the trail (1+ day of hiking) between Owase and Kumano City has neither convenience store, nor super market nor open restaurant on offer. That's how remote it is.

The […]

Various snacks were consumed on the trail and on my two hour wait for the train when I decided to bail for the day. My knee wasn't having it and it was already around 2pm which wouldn't make for great timing.

You can get hot beverages from the vending machines here, which is OK I guess.

The next day I had a not so early train so that left time for breakfast.

Scale is very nice and people were lining up before opening time to get in. The breakfast plate and coffee were excellent and I attacked the food like an animal.

As much as is being made of Japan’s rural crisis, you can live with this view for what I gather is not so much money and have:

* very regular train service
* only a 15 minute drive for groceries
* 3 hours drive from Kansai

Many parts of Europe have it worse.

The highlight of day 3 was this meal at Inaka in Owase. This is a kappou restaurant which is roughly described as 'kaiseki done in an izakaya'.

The food was amazing and maybe the best so far, prepared and presented in a very off-handed manner.

More snacks on the way to keep me alive.

This éclair was very decent and the barrage of crisps needs to continue at all times.

On the trail, I'm doing what I can to stay healthy and strong. I don't want to come down with a case of the trail sickness.

Though it's not really as if I'm suffering from a lack of exercise or protein at the moment.

The vitamin drinks from the konbini seem to be a thing here.

That same host yesterday made me this simple breakfast which was a nice way to get me started in the day.
