Last week I spent a really fruitful and fantastic time at 重庆大学 Chongqing University with students and professors at the Division of Metallurgical Engineering in the College of Materials Science and Engineering.

I also had the pleasure to also have the opportunity to meet Professor Chenguang Bai 白晨光 and Mr. Buxin Chen 陈布新 - both from Chongqing University. We spent time discussing on experiment-theory collaborations in modern metallurgical research, as well as academic exchanges to come in the near future. 👍🏻

Over the weekend, it was truly awesome to have met my incoming PhD student (Mr. Yucen Kuang 况雨岑 from Chongqing University 重庆大学) together with other Chinese graduate students here at Yonsei. It is Yucen's first time to Korea so it was a blast for him! 👍🏻

Anyone who wants to call basic scientific research “wasteful spending” should have to get past Reviewer 2.

Seriously, I wish people knew how hard we work, often for less $ than could be made in industry, all because we care about helping society and mentoring the next generation.

The biggest paper I was ever part of appeared on arXiV today: "Roadmap on Advancements of the FHI-aims Software Package". Over 20 years of work. Immensely grateful to the 200+ people on this paper, who pushed our ability to simulate materials forward! #chemsky #compchemsky

Spent a day with the School of Materials Science & Engineering at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, kindly hosted by Prof Tianquan Lin and Ms Wensha Huang. Still mesmerized by the gigantic scale of operations at SJTU! Mind blowing! 🤯 300+ faculty with > 9 buildings alone for SMSE!! Wow!

It went from "Is this real" to "ok, this is not funny" to "alright, it is hilarious". For those who did not know, last night South Korea was "momentarily" under the martial law issued by the President which was then unanimously voted down by the assembly within hours! 🤷🏻🤦🏻 Now, they want him out!

I have heard of such threats some years ago too and this is a tragedy. Really. A department of central science removed is just tragic. 😢
As a chemist who now works in Biology and knows the critical role of chemistry as a life science this ⬇️ saddens me to no end 😔 Chemistry is an *essential* science, it prob needs rebranding and a touch of fresh edu-paint to survive, not to be wiped! 😩 #chemsky
