It's a forest in a stormy summer, herbs or food have to be somewhere. Pela whispers that to himself through thunder and if he could just find anything for grandma, if he could run far enough, if that shadow would stop chasing for a moment, it hasn't left, it's still so solid and close and fast,

bringing nutrients back up through the tendrils. if it runs out of food it can reach with its tendrils (due to the prey being too large or far away), the remains of the prey drop off to be food for scavengers.
