The National Gallery of Art in DC is reopening!!!!! The museum’s West Building and its Sculpture Garden will reopen tomorrow, Friday, November 14.

Hilma af Klint, "Horse Chestnut," watercolor (dated June 12, 1919.) Last call before it closes Saturday, Sept. 27--go see "Hilma af Klint, "What Stands Behind the Flowers" at the Museum of Modern Art, in New York. The exhibition presents selections from the artist's exacting, multifaceted study of the natural world throughout her career. The bulk of the delicate works on paper result from her trips to the Goetheanum (a European center for Anthroposophism, extant today) in Dornach, Switzerland, during the summers of 1919 and 1920. Each of these dated works, such as "Horse Chestnut" (see top photo), includes the plant's genus & species, its common name (in Swedish), a diagram of its essence, & a Swedish-language interpretation.

As the artist explained, “Trans Forming Liberty challenges who we allow to embody our national symbols—and who we erase. It demands a fuller vision of freedom, one that includes the dignity of all bodies, all identities. Liberty isn’t fixed. She transforms, and so must we. This portrait is a confrontation with that truth.”

An exhibition at the California African American Museum is both an exercise in reverence and a declaration of resilience for the neighborhood’s artistic community.
