We talk a lot about political enemies and retribution these days, but Shapur I, leader of the Sasanian Empire, captured the Roman emperor Valerian and made him serve the rest of his life as a foot-stool whenever Shapur wanted to mount his horse.

That doesn’t get talked about enough.
