Beneath the Surface–Exploring Subtext with Allison Wyss July 17 - August 21 | Thursdays | Fiction | 6 weeks | Online Charles Baxter's The Art of Subtext: Beyond Plot examines those elements that propel readers beyond the plot into the realm of what haunts the imagination: the implied, the half-visible, and the unspoken. We'll pair each of Baxter's chapters with short stories or novel excerpts to make the ideas more tangible. Each week will also include concrete writing exercises and prompts to put the ideas to use. Writers who enroll in this class should already feel comfortable with more basic concepts like plot, character development, setting, dialogue, etc. But students should also expect to get practice with those elements as they enhance their understanding of this more advanced aspect of fiction.

After going back and forth for months, we finally directly asked the company if they could afford to pay us the fair, livable wages we are asking for. They said: "It's not that we can't; it's that we won't." They openly admitted that it's not an issue of cost, but an issue of greed. The company would rather not give the profits of the business back to us, even though they can't earn those profits without us. HPB Union Logo. (HPB stands for Half Price Books)
