"The pressure hangs over everyone: We have to protect one another, because no one else is coming to save us. We have to save each other."

America under Trump is all about neighbor protecting neighbor from lawless, faceless thugs who come in the night to kidnap and harm us.

Amazing must-read.

The church should be a place of perfect safety. The altar is a communal table: all are welcome. We all come to it sinful and broken, every one of us. We are commanded to go in peace, and there is no peace here. For some, there never will be again.
I remember the howling of white Catholics during the pandemic, when churches were asked to say closed to save people's lives. Our religious freedom! Our right to worship as we see fit! ICE shoots clergy in the face and repels the monstrance at the prison door and they say nothing now.
I do not attend Mass as often as I ought to, but when I do, it's muscle memory: When to stand and sit and kneel, what to say even if my kitchen Spanish only picked up every other word. The order is the same, and the silence.

There were probably 200 people there. At such great risk.
It was profoundly moving to see people come to church at great risk to themselves, knowing that on one side of the equation was the full might and power of the government of the United States, and on the other was people with plastic whistles and a single priest who stood in the door.
And I hesitate to privilege the experience of Chicago Roman Catholics above the people of every faith who have been targeted. But seeing the signs for Masses in Spanish hastily covered, seeing the courageous neighbors who guarded the church outside, was chilling in a very personal way.
When @df1.bsky.social invited me to worship a couple of weeks ago, I went, because: I am a practicing Catholic. Not a very good one, hence the practice, but when someone of whatever faith invites you to worship you go because that might be how the light gets in, you know?
It took one middling snowstorm to drive them out. Fuck off forever Nazi punks.

Happy to report that the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign academic senate overwhelmingly passed a resolution against the federal “compact” all of us in higher ed have been offered, encouraging our administrators to keep opposing it. #MADC www.senate.illinois.edu/2025-2026/20...

Jesus fuck Jordan stop goddamn running.
Red wine has to be good. White just has to be cold.
This is my thing. Nothing in the last year would have happened if 5 GOP senators had caucused with Democrats but there's nobody screaming in their faces every Sunday about it. We always have to clean up after the Republicans.
The craziest part is that Republicans could’ve ended the shutdown on their own anytime they wanted. 50 senators is all it would take.

But they didn’t feel like it. Which is accepted as a premise, so fixing things becomes Democrats’ responsibility, and apparently enough Democratic senators agree.
Cheetos are proof that God loves us and I will accept no argument on this.

Covid pretty much destroyed my trust that anything scheduled was ever going to occur, and Trump II is ... not helping that recover.
