When I took this picture someone in the room said “How many scholars does it take to start a PowerPoint?” #aarsbl25

Went to an interesting talk this morning at ICHL on a new phylogenetic analysis of the Semitic language family with some surprising results. Best fit with the model (calibrated with known dates for attested varieties) is 3430-2380 BCE for Proto-Semitic. A bit later than I would have expected.

Taylor Fritz today at #wimbledon. I caught the exact moment his racket made contact with the ball, distorting the strings and flattening the ball.

Captured this triumphant moment today when Amanda Anisimova got a chance for a breakpoint in the third set against Aryna Sabalenka. #wimbledon

Iranists: I'm making my way through Kreyenbroek's magisterial Early Zoroastrianism and Orality. I confess though I am skeptical about his translation and interpretation of Yt. 13.22 which he makes refer to resurrection. Does this reading have antecedents in scholarship? #avestan

My copy of Charles E. Hill’s The Johannine Corpus in the Early Church (Oxford, 2004) came from the personal library of #annerice. She considered Hill’s book as “full of real data” and the pages have quite a few of her notes.

In 2000, I had the privilege of staying a week at Casa Guidi in Florence. The most memorable experience was reading a first edition of Elizabeth Barrett Browning's book Aurora Leigh in the very room where she composed it. #poetry #bibliophile

"[The sun] returns to the east in the first gate ... On that day the night is longer and is double the daytime; the night is twelve parts exactly and the daytime six parts ... On that day the night decreases its length..." (1 Enoch 72:25-28)

The winter solstice.

My favorite experience in 2024 was watching hatchling sea turtles emerge from the sand and race to the shore before the seabirds could get to them.

Additional books I picked up at #SBLAAR24, not counting the one on Theodotion Daniel that Brill lost. Favorite book is the one on Zoroastrianism; it puts the various layers in the Avesta in a historical perspective. Must read for anyone interested in Iranian influence on ANE literature and cultures.

How responding to a #SBLAAR24 call for abstracts would read if it was written in a 400s BCE Achaemenid satrapy.
